Actually, we don't care when the game was started in -- usually. The save file already includes what version the campaign was saved in. The reason we ask is that often we don't open the save files, or even want a save file, if it's just an older version that players are reporting an already-fixed bug on. Then it's just a matter of they need to upgrade and it's fixed. Additionally, if we do suspect something is hokey, we want the whole history of which versions in general the game was played on, but that's pretty rare (happens a couple of times per year, if that -- though we did just go through a rash of those, it hasn't happened since 2009 before that). In that case, we prefer relying on the user reports as to what looked funky when, as sometimes they will play on a version that they didn't actually save in, or they've savescummed a number of times, etc. We've considered this particular problem pretty well, and there's not much in the way of generalized optimizations that can be made. |
