Summary0003119: Wave starships beeline to command station.
DescriptionI've seen several times a leech starship run past all my ship and spend the entire battle bumping against my force field. After closer examination, this behavior is rather common for starships in waves. Considering they're usually a supporter of the main wave, or a starship specializing in fleet ship distruction, this is a rather glaring bug in the AI.

Maybe it still thinks its a raid starship.

That would be one possibility. It seems to be exclusive to starships in waves, and not just leech starships. Here's a save mid-wave in which a flagship is ramming the left side of my FF, rather than actually supporting its troops.

Siege starships seem rather content trying to hit my harvesters, but that is about the only starships that doesnt rush towards the CC/homeplanet. This goes for both those found in and outside of waves.
The same tends to happen with spirecraft, except golems seem to have a high tendancy to go after you high value starships/forts.

At least Leeches don't WTF-pwn force fields anymore.

yeah same here, leach starships just rush to my command station and try to shoot the FF down. also, I'm playing against tech parasite and regular parasites often rush towards any of my golems and try to kill it. I understand they consider golems a high threat but I do believe parasites should focus their fire on turning my ships into one of them (even though I'm using only missile frigates to counter them).

With confirmation, I've edited the OP to clarify the scope of the problem.

A year on, this still happens, stupid AI starships still refuse to act intelligently.

For some starships (like the plasma siege, raid, bomber, maybe spire, and maybe beam), rushing the command station or other important structures is the right thing to do. However, the other starships should have a behavior similar to the fleet ships: just shoot at what is near, move towards something if there isn't something near, and rush important targets (like command stations) only if they aren't very well protected (like the forcefield went down or something)

The plasma siege, raid, and bomber starships have good reason to go for the CC at once, but even they behave illogically.

The Raider acts perfectly annoyingly, slipping past the defenses, it behaves properly for its job.

an unstopped bomber can easily take out a force field, but the problem with them is they shouldn't automatically go after the CC, they're not very effective when solo, and should recognise their short potential life span if they scoot on ahead into defended territory. It would be better if they used their power to take out turrets to help bring in the rest of the fleet.

Similiarly with the PS starship, it shouldn't see itself as a frontrunner, but as a heavy support.

Flagships should focus on giving as many of the wave as possible their boost, again acting as heavy support.

Leech starships, again, should stick with the crowd, supplementing forces if the player is defending with mobiles rather than turrets, and should pull back to roaming if no ships are capturable.

Essentially, the entire point of the starships, that is, being heavy support ships which cap out at a tiny number but cost about the same to do so, is invalidated if they don't play with the rest of the team.

For 5.070:

* Removed a "go for the command station over everything else when AI" behavior from a number of units, including:
** Leech Starships.
** Flagships.
** Zenith Starships.
** Spire Starships.
** Riot Starships.

Not sure if this will finally deal with it, but I think it was a factor :)
