Summary0003470: Global research menu.
DescriptionI've been introducing a couple people to the game lately and they really hate the interface. One issue that kept popping up is having to hunt down science ships in order to conduct research. This is both annoying and pointless.

There's no compelling reason that research should be gated through science ships; it should be accessible from a global menu.

Well, one of the compelling reasons for the current setup is that it allows us to have multiple distinct tech menus, which we use for the Fallen Spire campaign. There are other forms of extension we may use in the future that would be much harder with a global system.

Also, all the buy and tech menus are in the context of having a selected ship. So another compelling reason is that it would cost a significant amount of developer time and inevitably cause a significant number of bugs to change it.

But yea, there are definitely times where I wish I just had to press the key for selecting a science ship, rather than having to first go to a planet with a science ship. I'm hoping to change S (or maybe some other combo keybind to avoid accidental) so that if there's no science ship on the current planet it just jolly well _finds_ a planet with one of your science ships, moves you there, and selects it. Or something like that.

Even if it was just a global button itd be a big improvement. Ideally one shown on the interface. I tell people they have to dig up the research menu and they're like 'wat'.

In for 5.011:

* Added a new "Galaxy-Wide Select Own Science Lab" key-bind that works in both planet-view and galaxy-view (like go-to-flare does) and defaults to Ctrl+T.
** If you are viewing a planet and you own science labs on that planet, this drops any current selection you may have and selects one of those science labs (note that it does not center the viewport, there's another key for centering on the selection if you want that).
** Otherwise, if you own science labs on another planet in the galaxy, this drops any current selection you may have, switches your view to one of those planets, and selects one of those science labs on that planet, and centers the viewport on that lab.
** Otherwise (if you own no science labs), this does nothing.
** Note that this only works with your science labs, it completely ignores science labs of allied players. Also, it does not attempt to rotate through eligible selections the way other selection functions do.
** The reason for all the caveats of what this doesn't do is that its SOLE purpose is to let you access the tech-research menu from anywhere in the galaxy without having to know specifically where to find a science lab.
** Thanks to TheDeadlyShoe for the suggestion that inspired this.

So, long story short is that you'll be able to press Ctrl+T to go straight to the tech menu from anywhere in the game. Assuming you have at least one science lab, of course.

The key binding can be changed in the game, but I'm happy to listen to suggestions for a different default. But if the suggestion is a key that's already in use it won't get implemented ;)

Actual GUI buttons are a significantly bigger deal in terms of finding the space and the dev time, but it is at least vaguely a possibility for the future since it is a globally-relevant-enough function to at least be appropriate for the interface. But we have enough troubles with the folks playing 1024x600 or whatever the minimum unofficially supported is ;)

Nice. That will help a lot. I'm still rooting for a button but at least i can tell people to press Ctrl-T rather than 'click the hammerhead thingy and click through a bunch of times.'
