Summary0003958: Feedback on new crafting interface
DescriptionSo I don't know how to properly categorize this one, this is my best guess. On to the feedback.

The new crafting interface is interesting. The first thing that stands out to me is that the ingredients aren't very organized. When trying to make a scroll and am presented with a box full of dust in a haphazard fashion. Then I realized it mimics the order that the ingredients are in you inventory. If they were arranged by type of dust and in order of level, that would be helpful to find the ingredient you are looking for. It also seems that by showing every level ingredient separately, that when you high level with a lot of different levels of ingredients, it is going to be very messy.

Also, I liked the preview window of the old crafting interface. Looking in the tooltip to see was can be crafted is sort of a pain. Would it be possible to bring back the preview window and make it when you mouse over an ingredient the product would show up in the preview window?

I do like being able to quickly craft multiples of an item, really helpful for making scrolls in bulk.

LOL I was about to start a note about this too!

My comments:

1. I miss not being able to see the full spell for the second ingredient, regardless of whether it's unlocked. When I say "full spell" i mean the pretty graphical view with the icon and the details in the box. (Like c4sc4 said.)

2. The mouse-over text window in 'Potential ingredients' is WAY TOO BUSY.

3. I don't like having CLOSE right near Clear and Craft.

4. I don't like being unable to click the potential ingredients I can't actually use to see the picture.

5. I'd love to see the inventory item count in the "Potential Ingredients" icon list, not just the level.

6. After crafting, the bar that pops up in the middle of the screen obscures the Close/Clear/Craft buttons. I suggest you make it pop up between the Potential Ingredients area and those aforementioned buttons, even if it's not exactly the middle of the screen.

I agree with my alphanumeric friend about the organization of the potential ingredients. Perhaps have a two-tier selector, where one tier selects the level of the item, and the second tier shows you all the items you have of that level. Also, make the order of the items constant and not dependent on the order in your inventory.

hehe

Yep, I agree with you on all points there.

Never mind my 0000005 - I saw it was on your TBD list already.

Also, I'd really like to see the ability to take away single crafting commodities. For example, I added a gem and a walnut, but, now I'd like to see what that same gem plus a cherry makes, I'd like to take the walnut out with out removing the gem.

That said, the new interface looks a TON better. With a few tweaks, I think it will be really nice.

Thanks for the feedback :)

The potential ingredient order is indeed the order in the inventory; just doing what Chris asked me to do there. It will display up to three rows, if it runs out it stops. If it doesn't run out and there's still recipes that can be performed from adding one to the existing selected ingredients it will display the potential ingredients for those but grayed out (so you can see what you can look forward to tech wise, but only one step out because you can't click through those).

Upon review, Chris also asked me to make the potential ingredient tooltip way less busy and to include the full image of the result.

Further, he asked me to put the quantities back on the ingredient displays.

I guess I could move close further away from craft and clear, but not a lot of room without putting it somewhere totally different. Perhaps the upper-left corner?

"4. I don't like being unable to click the potential ingredients I can't actually use to see the picture."

This one is actually more lenient than the previous interface in that:
- You still can't click through something you don't have the tech for. That's 100% intentional. I don't want folks seeing the entire tech tree at the start of the game. Not that there's much of one right now, but one day.
- But you can click through a potential ingredient where you have the tech but no actual quantity of the ingredient on hand. The previous interface did not allow this. It is still blacked out, though.

"6. After crafting, the bar that pops up in the middle of the screen obscures the Close/Clear/Craft buttons. I suggest you make it pop up between the Potential Ingredients area and those aforementioned buttons, even if it's not exactly the middle of the screen."

Sure, I can give that a shot :) I was actually intentionally obscuring the buttons because I wanted it to be really really hard to miss the "you actually did just craft that thing" feedback. That fading bar+notice was not in the design but it just seemed really bad to not have any kind of obvious feedback (if the quantities were on the actual ingredients that would help a bit, but only a bit). So yea, I'll shift it down.

I should add that Chris's request after reviewing this was to remove the actual spell details (other than name), while adding the icon. Basically the tooltips are too big, but that's the only way to display all the info that folks want, and having smaller tooltips is more important than showing all the info.

Yea, I thought of that too afterward. The escape key will actually "back up one" but I'm thinking of having right-click do that too.

FYI, we're probably changing some of the "intentions" I mentioned above, so don't argue too hard against them until you see the next version and whether or not they're still there ;)

Okay, I will comment again after the new version.

As to the close button: I think putting it away from all the other buttons would be perfectly fine. Alternatively, get rid of the close button altogether in favor of the HIT ESC TO CLOSE (or go back one level in the items you've clicked to craft) mechanic.

By the by -- if there's more feedback, I suggest making a new issue instead of reusing this one, just so that this one doesn't get so huge.

I'll add my feedback here because my feedback is that this is nice. Very very nice indeed!

Thanks! Keith spent several hours on it today, and then I did as well. Making it work in all the various professions, at every possible screen resolution, in a way that makes sense was tough -- but I'm really happy with how it turned out! Kudos to Keith on setting all this up in such a short span of time.

One thing I forgot in the rush:

"
I guess I could move close further away from craft and clear, but not a lot of room without putting it somewhere totally different. Perhaps the upper-left corner?
"

Other than that I think we addressed all the specific points raised here.

Definitely give us more feedback; we'll keep hammering on this one over the coming weeks until it's good ;) I think it's pretty solid as-is, but players always seem to have much more refined tastes ;)

Personally I don't think that close needs to be moved at all, honestly. It would look odd if it was removed, and having that button is helpful for players who might otherwise be confused by the ability to do repeat craftings in the spellscroll/outfitter crafting stations.

This is also the standard general sizes and distances and side used in both windows and OSX, and the button is the smallest by far of the three on that row. And if someone does mis-click and hit the close button, they are at most one press of E and two or three mouse clicks from getting right back to where they were.

It's actually the same size as the clear button, but yea, it's smaller than Craft by a lot.
