Summary0004529: Client/Server Receiving Data Error (CRC32 mismatch)
DescriptionI've had some problems in my current game; ever since I entered the late game and built a large fleet, performance has been getting worse - FPS drops and general choppiness. I suspect it's due to lots of ships being active, and the AI having been given Blade Spawners makes it a lot worse, as they appear to never stop spawning blades no matter whether there are ships of mine on their planet or not.

The choppiness I can get used to; however, more pressing is that I have been getting frequent crashes. I cannot reproduce them reliably, and a lot of the time, the crash simply manifests as the computer becoming unresponsive - AI War freezes up, I hear the default Windows error sound and after that, I have to reboot, as I can no longer Alt-Tab out of the game or even bring up the Task Manager. It usually happens within a few minutes of playing.

On two occasions, I've noticed actual error messages, both pertaining to CRC32 mismatches - once as a Client Receiving Data Error, once as a Server Receiving Data Error (after which the game said it was "Waiting for Players" and I couldn't continue playing, but was able to quit the game normally). I've attached a zip file containing the error logs as well as an autosave from before the error, and a manual save from after receiving the error, for both different errors.

My specs: Playing version 5.000, single player, Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bit), 2 GB of RAM, Pentium E2220 2.4 Ghz, ATI Radeon HD 4800 (512 MB); would it be possible that I am simply running out of memory? I've had two or three random garbage-collection-related crashes in the past, though they didn't recur after reloads.

Looking at these errors, it looks like network communications are actually getting truncated. Most likely this is due to an out of memory issue given the way that it's locking up your machine (try alt+f4, if you haven't already), but that's hard to say for absolute certain.

The other thing I should note is that you really should play on the latest beta -- a lot of the slowdowns and such, and the blade spawners thing, have been resolved since then. The latest beta is substantially more stable than the 5.000 original release, and most likely you'll stop having the issue after upgrading to that.

Alt-F4 doesn't do anything in these cases, either.

I'll try upgrading to the latest beta, something I was already planning to do after finishing this game. Thanks for the quick response, I'll keep an eye on further crashes. :)
