There's only one function in the game that deletes the world, and that's the Delete World option in the menu. It prompts you asking if you're sure you want to delete it, and then does so if you say yes. If your world folder is really gone, that's the only thing that could have happened as there is no other code that calls anything remotely like that. If your world folder is there but corrupt, that's another matter.

I only hit load world and when I clicked on the game, it froze for a second and then the world is gone. I even checked the folder the worlds are in and it was gone. It never asked for confirmation.

That's... extremely bizzare. The freezing for a second sounds like the delete world function. And there's literally nothing in the Load World branch that deletes anything. I'm not sure what to do with this, as we've never had this happen before and there's nothing I can see in the code that would seem likely to cause what you describe.

What I can suggest is an un-delete tool, such as perhaps this one: http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ I've never used that one, but there are various ones that I have used (usually for pay), which helps when stuff gets deleted. Something like that, ideally a free one, could let you recover the world and continue onward.

Beyond that I'm not really sure what to say at this point, although I do recommend backing up your world file periodically in case it gets corrupted by some bug from beta (not that that's what happened here, but actually the corruption would be worse because you can't just un-delete something that got overwritten with a corrupt copy).

Well, if you don't need any files from the base game, I'm going to do a complete reinstall of the game as soon as I've determined if I can recover the world. If not, then, nothing I can do about it.

This has not been my weekend...

There's not anything that would have a record on this sort of thing. I'm not sure that a reinstall would really help things, but certainly that's one thing to try. I'm sorry for the frustration here, but remember that this is an early beta and some things are bound to happen, though this is a first on this one and I don't have any leads on it at the moment.

I wonder if its because I created those two worlds with the apostrophes and such and that corrupted the game. It seems I'm the only one who tried that so maybe its possible.

That's a possibility -- the game is supposed to not allow you to even create worlds with an apostophe in the name. Though that was added after 0.500, so if you created that in 0.500 you could have dodged the issue and then run into corruption because of that.

But that would only have affected those two specific worlds, not actually anything else created down. Having the game crash can't corrupt the game itself -- the game itself ought to be fine. The only thing at risk from a crash is actually losing data files themselves, in the form of the world folders. But it's not possible for a crash to, say, overwrite the game's own code so that it starts behaving somehow differently.

Well, those two folders still exist and I can't delete them so that tells me that the game is corrupt...

I'm also getting this error now. "Could not find this item, this is no longer located in C:\Program Files (x86). Verify the item's location and try again". I uninstalled AVWW, but this folder still remained after the uninstall and it has quite a bit of stuff in it.

the AVWW main folder and contents still remained.

It sounds like the hard drive space may have become corrupt completely unrelated to the game itself.

Perhaps running a chkdsk /f (or equivalent) may fix it then? Worth trying.

In terms of not being able to delete a specific folder, that has nothing to do with the game or its fitness -- that's a windows thing.

It sounds like windows has locked the folder or corrupted its persmissions, actually. If you go into the properties for the folder you should be able to re-grant yourself permissions if you're an administrator, and that might be all that is needed here.

In terms of stuff that remained after uninstall, that would be either data files or files that were added via in-game updates, which the updater would not clear out automatically.

I granted myself permissions, but that didn't work. Honestly, beginning to think that a complete wipe of my OS is needed at this point, this is not the only program giving me troubles right now.

Oh, goodness -- hopefully nothing that drastic needed. But you might need to do some sort of malware/virus sweep, from the sounds of it.

If you grant yourself permissions, and it doesn't work, then there are two main things to try:
1. Make sure to propagate the permissions to all the child objects. There's a checkbox for that.
2. If you're not properly able to set the permissions to yourself, you may also need to "take ownership" of the folder. I forget the exact steps there, but it's all through the windows GUI and should be something both quick and something you can easily google.

If neither of those work, then yeah it sounds like the folder itself is corrupted and you might want to run a scandisk/checkdisk. Sometimes those can repair the OS folder tables when things get messed up. And it's worth doing, because your problem might not be virus/malware, it might be that you're getting some bad blocks on your hard drive as a sign that's starting to fail. It's premature to say something like that for sure, but that's one of the nice thing about doing a disk check, is it answers that question for you. No point in doing an OS reinstall if the disk itself is just going to corrupt the OS again.

Well, I'm off to class so I'll certainly give those a try. In the mean time, I think I recovered the world files so hopefully I can play again when I try again tonight.

Check out the latest 0.515. There was an error in 0.514 that had nothing to do with your specific files, it was just a general bug with some worlds; you should be okay! Fingers crossed anyhow.

Tried to load on latest BETA, but still received the same error. Oh well. :( At least I was only lvl 5.

If you post the error or the world file or both, we can look into it; although it will be in the morning, because right now I desperately need sleep. Ta for now...

"COULD NOT LOAD WORLD"
Unfortunately, the game was not able to load the following world (Insert my hardrive and the AVWW file location)

Thanks for trying Chris, hopefully you'll get it tomorrow, but if not at least you tried :).

@kingisaaclinksr - your world is missing it's regions.dat and world.dat files (should be in the base of that folder you uploaded). That would explain why it can't load.

Did you run a chkdsk on your drive? As if corrupt that may have deleted them, beyond that I'm not sure.

Ugh. :( Yes, I ran a chkdsk on my hardrive, nothing found. As for those files, they are gone then, that's all I could recover is what I uploaded. -_-. Sometimes I wish Windows was better at its job.

Its looking like an OS issue, not a hardrive issue, since a reboot took care of the error issue that was starting to pop up all over. Unsurprising.

Ah, dang, yeah -- without those two files, it can't load the world. If you have those two files then any other part of the world can get corrupt and you only lose data on certain regions, but that's basically the two central indexes for the world data, and without them it's basically missing the core of the savegame. Sorry! :/
