Summary0004591: Crash when exploring new tiles
DescriptionJust got a hang when exploring out from a new game (lvl 4 civ, exploring north into lvl 12-13 territory). The crash happened as I moved north then quickly east as the tiles were being revealed, and two messages came up - one about an evil overlord oppressing and another about an evil lieutenant assisting oppression. On reloading I was on the tile prior to moving north. Sadly the game did not reproducibly crash and the world has saved past the point, however I did notice a reasonable (1-2s) delay when I stepped north and got the two messages again.

Yeaah, not much to go on :-/

This looks like it's related to 0004406. If it's the same thing, then it seems it wasn't fixed completely. :-(

JUST had it happen again, level 4 civ exploring south from a level 13 region to a level 14 region. I have it hung right now! (C+A+D -> task manager seems to work, and after a bit of fudging even tab into a browser). Is there anywhere I can look for live log files? UnhandledErrors.txt hasn't had anything new in 4 days so nothing there.

Edit : I'll leave it there hanging awaiting further instructions :-P or a few hours if I get no reply (your fault, game is too fun :-P).

See if you can get info about disk accesses or CPU usage. I have no idea how to do that on Windows, though.

AVWW is:

1) Not responding
2) Sitting at 12.5% CPU usage. I have a i920 so windows thinks it's 8 processors, so looks like AVWW is taking a virtual core all to itself.
3) Not triggering disk reads or writes, but that doesn't necessarily mean there wasn't any when the hang happened :-/
4) sitting at 893Mb ram usage. Pretty standard? I'll hang out and see if this goes up..

Edit: I've taken a zip of the world as is (still hung), so that I could try to reproduce it a few times. I'll add it to the issue. Edit2 : Done

Edit3 : Ah yep, found the core by core breakdown, yes it seems AVWW is pounding 1 (virtual) core 100%. See screenie. Edit4 : Or not, apparently only 1 file can be uploaded per issue? You'll have to take my word for it then ;-)

That smells like an infinite loop somewhere. Just realised that this means the issue probably isn't Mac-specific (as we'd assumed previously, because both times it manifested it was on a Mac) -- assuming it's the same issue.

Yeah definitely. I'll try to get an exact order to reproduce, hopefully can figure something out as I have a zip of the world mid-hang now :-)

Edit : AARgh no luck with quite a few attempts at trying to force the issue. I'll just continue to play normally taking world backups as often as I can remember, so that I can hopefully have a world that can easily reproduce it. I am pretty damn sure it has something to do with whatever events happen when you explore a tile that gives the 'xyz oppresses this area' message. Both my crashes so far have been at such times, and I get a 1-2s lag when moving into a tile that then triggers the message about 50% of the time. Will post any further developments :-/

One of my two was exploring an areas that had exciting new oppression. I'd guess this increases the likelihood of the bug manifesting, but isn't a requirement.

So:

1) Is it a hang, or is it a crash? Or does it hang sometimes and crash others?
2) Do you have any way to reliably reproduce this? It looks like no from the notes, but just checking.

1: It's a hang rather than a crash.
2: I don't. I haven't seen it since 0.511, but what Armanant is seeing looks a lot like what I had. (I also haven't done much exploring of new regions since then, which could explain it.)

1: Same as jerith, hang, not crash. 100% thrashing a single v.core (thank god we're not using single core computers these days mirite?)
2: I've tried for a few hours, but no luck. My guess has been that it has to do with sighting new overlord/lieutenant areas, so I've been trying to hit that 'condition', but only managed to find one extra one in that game, so that's not a huge sample set.. I figured out a good trick to quickly grind civ levels by the end of it though*, so tomorrow I'll start a new world, grind up nice and high pretty quick and then zoom around the map and see if it crashes.

*(spam end turn on your settlement and kill the groups of bosses that come. always 4 of them, always on the first part of the map, best civ exp/time I think. Obscenely better than any other way I've found, probably to the point it might need toning down..)

Okay, in for 0.518:

* Put in protection against several potential infinite loop situations that could happen on machines where the CPU speed far outstripped the hard disk speed.

If you guys are able to get it to happen again in 0.518, I'd love to hear about it. Armanant, it sounds like you are able to make this reliably happen, which is awesome; it's so much harder to track down when it's really intermittent. Personally I can't get it to happen at all on either of my machines, and you two are the only two that have mentioned it as well (in connection with the world map in particular), so that's curious.

If it happens again, I'd really like to know exactly what happened right before it happens if at all possible. What you've already said gave me a good lead on this, and I may have fixed it, but we'll see!

Happens on OSX. Moved to the east and the game hangs while the music keeps playing on my MBP. I had to reset since the game is using the 2nd video card (stupid mac design). On 0.519.

An update on my side - I still got 1-2s lag in 0.519 when exploring the edges, but no crashes. 0.520 however, completely seamless. LOVING the new world map handling, feels MUCH more organic and natural for the 'possible to scout area' to just slowly expand, really gets the feeling of my civilization 'Pushing out' into the wilderness. What 5 levels ago was just darkness, I am now considering sending expeditions to explore, and in 10 levels may be a safe part of my booming empire ^^
