Summary0004686: Messing about with some room ideas.
DescriptionThis isn't really artwork, but that's the closest I can come in the available categories. After seeing 0004674 and discovering that Mac people don't get a map editor, I drew some rooms in Emacs. I don't have any easy way to test them, so I haven't. I did look around at a few other rooms in the game data, so I think I have the formatting right.

Three of the four are generic smallish rooms and the fourth is a stairwell. If they're useful, I might do a few more at some point -- possibly even repurpose a level editor from a game I helped write recently to make it a bit quicker.

How do you plan to handle copyright/licensing for player-contributed content? I'm happy to just hand this kind of thing over to use (or not) as you see fit, but it's probably a good idea to have some kind of policy or process or whatever if you're going to be accepting contributions en masse.

Nice! In terms of the submissions process, we intend to set that up in the forums with a note of basically "don't post it if you don't want us to use it, and if we use it we'll credit you" sticky in there. If people want to create stuff that they don't want us to use, that's absolutely fine with me as well, and they can mark it as such or not submit it to us. Still trying to catch up with so many things that I haven't had time to get all this settled out yet, though.

I'm also happy to post the source of the main map editor, if you want -- it is in .NET, but could be cross-compiled to Mono with ease I expect.

Wow, thanks!

The only extra comment I have is, if you are going to do them in text, why not use VIM instead of EMACS? ;-)

Chris, do you want me to add these? Or are you gonna take care of them?

I actually use both. Emacs is fantastic on my local machine, but vim/vi is installed on the far side of pretty much every ssh connection I use and is much better for that kind of thing. As a result, I get to fire shots from both sides of the editor war. :-P

(Emacs actually has draw-mode (or something similar) that might be useful for this kind of thing. I haven't tried it, though.)

jerith - I'm going to add these to the game. Thanks! One thing though, the staircase won't really work as a staircase the way it is. They won't really work unless you have exactly two places for the doors to go, one at the top and one at the bottom. Would you prefer that I make it another type of room (it would work as a hallway)? Or would you prefer me to edit it to make it useable as a staircase?

Either or both, whichever you think is best. I'm more interested in exciting room variety than anything else, and this was more an exercise in playing with the data format than a serious attempt at coming up with usable room designs. The "top and bottom door spaces" is useful information that I'll keep in mind next time. :-)

Ok, I'll probably make that a hallway then. :-) Feel free to add as many as you wish. Also, in case you aren't aware, there is a sub-forum for content additions now. Thanks!

I've added these into the game. Thanks again!
