Summary0009063: Ice Cross won't destroy adjacent crates
DescriptionTo reproduce: Stand as close as possible to a huge wall of crates, deeper than ice cross reaches (the kind often found in basements). Fire ice cross, and none of the crates will be destroyed.

Expected behavior: Ice cross damages/destroys those crates.

Speculation:
* It looks like ice cross doesn't even appear where the crates are. I think what's happening is that ice cross produces 8 or so projectiles (2 per cardinal direction), with the instructions "if a projectile would appear in a wall, instead produce no projectile there." I think ice cross is treating these crates like an ordinary (indestructible) wall, and refusing to appear.
* This probably also happens with similar spells that emanate out of the player, and don't travel. So I'm guessing that if you're standing right next to many crates, cleft smoglet will appear & destroy them just fine, but circle of fire will not.
* I expect that crates above/below you would similarly prevent ice cross from appearing.

Why this matters: When wanting to get past the hundreds of crates in basements, I'd like the option of using Ice Cross to deal with them.

Possible negative consequences of implementing this: A player uses ice cross in a room where they're standing on crates, and inadvertently destroys those crates, sending them plummeting. (Although I'd think that'd actually be kind of funny, and a great learning experience. Plus, it just makes sense that if a spell of destruction is going to emanate out of you, then whatever's in the way that can be damaged is going to get damaged.)

Or perhaps limit it that if the first set goes to the left, it continues breaking through everything to the left, and if the first goes to the bottom, it continues breaking through everything beneath you. Standing on platforms or crates can be a good way to line up using a distant ice cross, but if you jump, it can be taken as attempting to shoot downward too.

But I'm not sure how with this suggestion I am, as there are plenty of other, better options. Any of the whips, flamethrower/geyser, throw rock, ice rock, energy slice, etc. Using a skill where you make the air around you super-freeze, and many small crystals of ice stab outward, I can only think that it minimally makes sense freezing inside an object. Same with causing small explosions in the air around you; it could make small explosions explosions through everything, no matter how distant (or past impassable barriers), but inside like a crate, it just makes more sense to make the boxes break by nearby small explosions.

From a real world perspective, if magic was possible, these spells seem to work just fine and very natural already... Though if a change is made, I'd definitely fight for it to be as stated first.

This is a good idea.

Ice Cross as it is is about twice as powerful as any other spell on account of each shot dealing full damage and having splash into the range of the adjacent shot. I found an Ice Cross 1 I'd procured early on still beat out most Tier 3 spells. Only at Tier 4 did it start to level out. This in and of itself isn't a problem, because Ice Cross carries some pretty hefty drawbacks (getting in really close, serious repercussions when barrels are about or on anachronism missions).

Making it destroy boxes you might be standing on fits in with the above theme of "really good, but can bakfire horribly if used in the wrong spot".
