Summary0014783: Autoresolve returns incorrect values
DescriptionI hit autoresolve on turn 1 of an ambushed by assassin mission. I get 10k, kill 0 ships, fail the mission, and rescue 23 Evuck pilots in around 100 auto-turns. If I quickly manually die, then I get 0 credits and 0 pilots.

If I kill all the squadrons & 1 flagship then autoresolve, I get 39 pilots & ~10k credits. If I instead manually die I get around 4k credits and 0 pilots. If I kill a second flagship it bumped me up to 52 rescued pilots using autoresolve.

Reading this, the thing that jumps out at me is that it is marking the mission as failed for you. Do you have a save where that is happening?

Beyond that, I'm not really sure what you're getting at with the numbers. A few notes:

1. Auto-resolve is not a direct simulation of exactly how you would have played. The computer autopilot is worse than you, and takes a longer time.

2. As part of that, the AI has time to deploy more ships, and thus more pilot drops happen. When you kill a flagship before all its squadrons come out, then the ships and pilots all die inside the flagship and you get no credits nor pilots for them being in there. You are likely to get more of them due to more of them deploying during autoresolve.

3. Related, you have to actually pick up the pilots when you are playing manually. So if you pick up no pilots at all, then it doesn't matter how many popped out. With autoresolve, I suppose it may be granting a bit too many pilots, is perhaps one point?

If you can point me in the direction of what you feel like is wrong, that would be helpful, because I think I'm missing something. :)

0. I misspoke, by failure I meant that the AI driver had to warp out on "death". (Not winning is failure, right?)

1. Sure. that's expected.

2. This is draco's assassin mission save, wherein the enemy is shooting 2 million damage shots at you. I've ran the mission many times (died a lot, and survived a few times). The AI launches all initial squadrons which are swiftly dealt with. IIRC this grants no additional income, if you suicide afterwards, than if you do not kill the initial squadrons. I don't recall the enemy deploying any further reinforcements, but given that these combats last 200-300 rounds, you'll forgive me if I'm mistaken. I think the discrepancy is that in autoresolve more squadrons with a higher rate of pilot drops are being deployed than I would recall experiencing in game. Likewise, I seem to get credits for destroying these squadrons. Perhaps autoresolving is bringing in medium sized ships which are destroyed for credits? But then the autoresolve should report me killing additional ships, which is does not. Indeed, at the end of all of the autoresolves it shows the player killing only the ships manually killed and no further ships. I can't tell where it is getting the credits and pilots from.

3. I suspect this is the core example of my confusion (linked my my previous omission. I would have provided a screenshot, but as noted previously, getting a screenshot to take is unpredictable). The autoresolve reports me killing 0 further ships. I have captured 0 pilots manually. I end up saving 23-52 pilots via autoresolve. Perhaps they are coming from partially destroyed squadrons? I can't tell.

4. If we had additional information (perhaps even in the combat information window available via i) about the credit value and pilot drop rate we could predict expected outcomes more easily?

Thanks!

* Fixed a number of math issues relating to pilots and credits granted and influence cost during auto-resolve when the enemy forces were overwhelmingly strong in particular.

* Fixed a number of issues relating to auto-resolve not properly counting as a withdrawal when that was what actually happened; so for instance, assassins would just keep hammering you repeatedly.

Not sure if this was in 1.007, but I'm still getting too many rescued pilots. On the first battle auto-resolving gives you 23+ pilots.

Also, credits are being reported incorrectly. See Attached screenshot. Autoresolve claims I'll get 71. Mission completion gives 900. Possibly linked to allied ships getting killed too.

I see what's happening with auto-resolve. I'm playing Normal/Normal, typically I kill the enemy flagships before they are able to deploy more than 2 or 3 squadrons. So they "lose" another 10 squadrons. It may be those 10 squadrons that the autoresolve ends up fighting and killing to provide the extra pilots.

You can also pick up Hydra Pilots.

Thanks!

* The number of pilots that you pick up during auto-resolve is now MUCH more appropriate.
