Did you change your keybindings in any specific way?

I think I set the "end turn/acknowledge" key to Space.
But that has been a couple of versions ago...

This is happening for me as well and I have default keybindings.

Hitting escape while looking at the map with no windows open or modes active takes me to the menu. Hitting escape again takes me back to the game (I think -- I may have clicked a button instead). From that point on, escape will never take me back to the menu -- it's just ignored.

* Fixed a bug from the prior version where the Escape key would not open the menu after your first time doing it.

Bear in mind that you can still get to the menu by using the settings icon down in the bottom center of the screen (the little yellow gear).
