IMO there is enough data available to the player to indicate that this is it's own resource. If you build a housing building that requires prepared meals and end turn, you get notified of a resource shortage for prepared meals in that district.

Counter suggestion: We need a better resource screen for each district that indicates which resources it is supplying and demanding.

gnosis: You don't need meals, your people would like it if they didn't have to eat raw foodstuffs though ;)

If they cover the need for food it should be aggregated with the food toolbar at the top.

Having a seperate way to cover the need for food throws a wrench in the presentation GUI and makes it even more difficult for the player to understand the game.

Perhaps prepared meals should be introduced on act II

Food used to be a 4 part equation. 1 water + 1 food + restaurant = capacity for one person (tied into housing to create the pop caps). Restaurants were dropped for simplicity and changed into a need from the people. You don't need them, like you don't need police, though your populace will behave better if they are around :)

Perhaps a rename to "recreational food" or "junk food" then.

The flavor text that implies that food is used in its construction doesn't help either.

As a new player I'm just stating how confusing this is.

It depends on what you want to do with that resource gameplay wise and story wise. Cooking implies it's just plain food. So pick a name based on what you want it to be, but something that stands out and is logicaly seperate from everyday food.

Hence "junk food" or "luxury food", or "snaks", or "sweets". i.e. something that you can survive without and something that won't be confused with the base need for food.

I think the problem is that no matter what you call it, the confusion of 'does it use food to make a food product' is going to come up. I feel like the issue is less what it is called, and more stressing the fact that it isn't adjusting the amount of food in your empire in any way, but simply satisfying a need. It might be best to change it from anything food related to something entirely different. Like... air conditioning or something. It would suck for all the events and such written towards food, but would certainly prevent the food confusion. Personally I didn't experience it, but I can see how very easy it would be to do.

* Prepared Meals are now called Restaurant Seating, because this is far less confusing.
** Side note: there are still some unrelated bad references to "meals" that used to exist in v1 and v2 of the game, but those will be cleaned up as we get a chance.
