Summary0022049: Alt + select does not properly deselect a unit since 1.003
DescriptionAs in the title, Alt + select seems bugged. It will quickly deselect and reselect the unit in quick succession. This has been consistent since 1.003.

To reproduce: Press a # key with a fleet on it. Then alt + select the flagship. It will lose it's selection and then immediately regain it.

Sometimes it deselects the whole fleet instead. It just seems buggy.

Technically this is working "by design" for the most part.

You've selected a fleet, which intends for the entire fleet to stay selected.

The alt-click then says "deselect this one item from the fleet." That does so, but then immediately reselects it because the fleet is selected, not the individual ships.

When you're sometimes deselecting the entire fleet, that's because you're holding alt and double-clicking the flagship (probably by accident as you click on it in general), and any double-clicks on a flagship are fleet-wide.

So I agree that this is nonoptimal and confusing, but it's not technically a bug. I'm not sure what to do about it.

If we could have hotkeys to "Select all ships but the flagship in a fleet" with a modifier, or selecting specific ship lines, it would help a lot. Still, as you said, the way it works is not intuitive, and leads to bad UX I feel.

I'm bringing this one up because I was going to report it, but saw it here. Is there any way to change this behaviour to select only the ships from a fleet except the flagship? The workaround is to move the whole fleet somewhere, then select the flagship, move it elsewhere and mouse select the ships. Adding a keybind that does explictly that could be a decent workaround?

I think we already have a weird way to do something like that. You can set the flagship to ignore commands unless you are holding ctrl or something.

Yes, but for me personally, I would need to put it back to "Follow all orders mode" constantly. The button you're talking about is Z I think.

I'm not really sure I understand the goal, to be honest. If you want your flagship to just sit there except when you move it around on very rare occasions, that's what Stationary Flagship Mode is all about. It's really preferable to the alternative if you are not using pursuit mode. The reason I say that is that you give the move or attack orders to the flagship and it then holds them but does not do them. Any replacement ships that are built immediately inherit those orders, which is super duper useful. Otherwise they would just sit by the flagship, again unless you're in pursuit mode.

Assuming you're using attack-move, regular attacks and moves, or something similar, the current approach is the ideal one aside from being atypical and thus a bit confusing at first.

I am assuming that for a given flagship, there is not equal parts time "go where I say" and "stay there until I say." I assume it's mostly the latter for transports and certain golems or arks, and mostly the former for most golems and arks. I don't have it set up with those defaults since stationary flagship mode confuses people, but for a transport I'm assuming that usually you just want it to follow orders when moving from one planet to another, or adjusting slightly on one planet. Beyond that, you want it to have orders but not follow them so any replacement units get those orders.

...is my thinking. What am I missing?

You're probably missing nothing. I'll have to try to use more the Stationary Flagship Mode because it seems a powerful tool that I'm not used to use.
