Summary0023186: Strange AI Threat Generation
DescriptionIn the recent beta I found that there is a bunch of thread coming in that I can't really explain why they happen.

Reproduction is simple:
-> Start a game
-> Cheat AIP to a higher number (I suggest something like 500)
-> Watch the AI throw a log of high-mark units at the player without the player ever attacking any planet.

It seems as if whenever AI ships spawn as part of the regular reinforcement of planets a part of them instantly go to threat... Not sure what this is, but I've never seen it before.

Once you get to a high enough AIP the AI will allow the Hunter Fleet to just start building ships. Is this what you are seeing?

Maybe. I also get the feeling minor factions are creating threat again. I've seen (vanilla, before anyone asks) threat spikes of 1.4k strength with Macrophages.

And (though this was modded) I've seen Mk7 ships roll in at like 30-40 AIP after around 15 minutes.

Hmm, I may be stupid though. I think that's just Hunter spawning there, but before there were bigger threat spikes. Can't get it to reproduce now. It would jump to insane heights and throw Mk7 units at the player right from the start...

I verified game files in the meantime and it repaired 1 file, so maybe it was a hitch during modding or updating the game...

Given the "how to reproduce" steps above, it doesn't sound like there are any minor factions to be triggering threat.

Ok, I have to revise, partially.

The big threat spikes of thousands of strength were due to some faulty strength allocation in my mod (where one of the nukes had several hundred strength points, and once they turned into threat they became BIG notifiers)

That said, they didn't turn into threat because of me. They did it right as Nanocaust invaded the planet these nukes were on.

I'm going back to vanilla and seeing if it can be reproduced.

Ok, I'm 90% sure I figured it out now.

It's not actually threat spawning, its a counting error. All drones on AI planets seem to get counted as threat.

Reproduction is easy: Put an enemy-to-AI faction into the galaxy (or multiple, Nanocaust comes to mind), against a Swarmer AI type. It produces a good amount of threat from the get-go.

Not sure it threw at me (multiple times) high-ranking units from the start as threat. Might've been a different bug that I was unable to reproduce ever since, or had something to do with that one steam-repaired file...
Couldn't get that issue again. I'll keep playing and testing if I can.

Ok, here some screenshots how (though this is modded) after 0000064:0000010 minutes there's around 10 strength in AI sentinels of Mk5 units with 37 AIP.

Any idea what could be causing this?

And now there's a bunch of Mk5 Hunter ships too...

I've made it so drones are no longer counted as threat (not in current steam beta, will be in the next one)

Are we talking about not in general, or only if their progenitor did not count as threat?

Because there is a number of units that can be threat and I think their drones should count as that too. So I wouldn't say that drones in general should be excluded from thread count, they should base it off whether or not their parent is thread.

Do undeployed drones count toward the strength of their parent? I think that they do...

So yeah, I think that the counting for drones in terms of threat is basically a matter of what the parent is. Not sure how hard that is to chain together.
