Summary0023664: Fallen Friends Quickstart Is Deceptively Difficult
DescriptionTwo diff-7 AIs, Intensity 5 Fallen Spire, Realistic Map, Moderate Quick Start category. All of that is great except for the combo of Realistic and Moderate. Playing Fallen Spire on a map that isn't chokepoint heavy is painful. I have no issue with the quickstart in general, but I think that either the map type should be changed to more defensible one, or the quickstart recategorized to Hard.

I think recategorization to Harder would definitely make it the easiest thing in Harder. I also think it was a design goal to have a Moderate quickstart for Fallen Spire. That being said, some reorganization is probably due, here.

A better maptype will fix the quickstart - but this ticket has highlighted that there isn't a DLC1 Quickstart for Harder thus a modified version of the Realistic quickstart should probably also get added too, likely showing off the Scourge and making use of a harder AI type, like Shield Hater(Less worthwhile with Scourge), One-Way Doormaster, or Peacemaker.

It's actually not possible for us to definitively change the location of a quick start, because Steam and GOG are not always good about deleting old copies of files. So I think that adjusting the difficulty of this is the way we'd go.

What map type do you guys have in mind?

If anyone wants to create more quickstarts, we are always open to including those in general, too.

Clusters was a common one in AIW1, if I recall right. Don't know/remember why I didn't put it on here, though.

Bubbles and Spiral Snake are good Spire maps. Clusters would work as well, as would Compass and Concentric. I.e. pretty much anything that you can expand while maintaining a controllable amount of chokepoints into your territory. Sometimes that's possible on Realistic, but sometimes it isn't. I personally think this quickstart is fairly comparable to those in the Harder category, and certainly closer to those than the Moderate ones. The viewer on my channel who brought this to my attention is of that mindset at well, finding it *way* harder than a normal dual-7 AI game.

I'd be wary of picking Spiral Snake, since there'd be no way around anything if it shows up as it's one planet wide. Might suck to get one of the special Relic spawning structures in your way early, forcing Spire before you might want it (so you could defeat it). Maybe...I don't super remember much of my experience on Spire.

Compass with Large Cluster Size looks okay, and it appears the homeworld will always spawn in the middle, where there's some room to expand before hitting one planet wide areas, and has nearby chokes.

Bubbles is mostly one planet wide, and looks as if it can generate places to get stuck/trapped like Clusters. Seems to me as if your starting spawn could vary a lot here, like Clusters. I'd think that to be important for using a Quick Start unless you put it in the lobby and specifically choose the spawn.

Concentric looks reasonable as well, offering many, many chokes, but also extra connections to move around, and it doesn't look possible to get stuck behind something here. You always start in the middle as well.

Out of those, and Clusters, Concentric looks to be the best to me.

Compass isn't an option since it's DLC2 only, and this is a quickstart for dlc1

Huh. I...wasn't aware that was from there. Sorry. I can't remove mention of it or anything anymore if needed/wanted.

My bad on the errant map type, I forgot I had re-enabled that which shall not be mentioned.
