Summary0024472: Spire relic reaction too intense.
DescriptionIf the spire relics exogalactic strike force responses scale with hacking, they are still bit too intense that renders them extremely hard to play when going above Diff 5 and Spire response intensity 5. If its intended, are there any tips for surviving above diff 5/Intensity 5 for spire?

How many planets do you have? You're meant to have at least a few to help you defend. Having 5 planets can greatly help with the extra science gained, and you can use your two battlestations to hold the line by placing turrets along the relic route.

I usually have 12 cities before I go for the first spire relic. Getting the relic home isn't the problem per se but the exogalactic response after is

Getting the relic home is usually a lot harder than the exo response. I would suggest upgraded military commands on all your perimeter chokepoints, reconsider how much of your economy is in turrets/battlestations/citadels and what kinds, etc.

So, one of the things going on right now is that there are far more hacking points being expended by the time this is being triggered now, so I think that the balance may have drifted. What sort of strength are you seeing in the exos? I'm curious how that compares to what folks were seeing before. I am open to tuning this, but have no real guidance on what would be appropriate yet.

Okay, I stand corrected. These are not affected by hacking response at all, that I can see. It's AIP and the difficulty level and that's it.

Actually, it looks like this is not based on a hacking response at all, but just how many relics you've captured and what the AIP is. The higher the AIP, the more intense this will be.

Relevant code:

Int aipAdjustedIncome = (FactionUtilityMethods.GetCurrentAIP() / 10) * Difficulty.ExoIncomePer10AIP;
                FInt multiplier = Difficulty.ExoIncomeMultiplierPerCity * GlobalData.NumRelicsCaptured;
                FInt change = (Difficulty.BaseExoIncome + aipAdjustedIncome) * (multiplier);

It sounds like the response strength should be about the same as what it used to be, but there may be some other factors in play. For instance, those are now of the Relentless AI Wave faction, rather than the Sentinels, with the fallover to Hunter if they don't kill you in 3 minutes.

It's ALSO possible that, from the changes a few weeks ago, things have gotten more intense because of my general buffs to AI Waves, even though these are exo strikes. If that's the case, and things are suddenly much harder than before, then just reducing some of the feeder variables would be a simple fix for this.

Fundamentally I'm not sure that anything overall has changed except maybe the amplifications of exos in general. I was mistaken in thinking this was related to hacking.

Coming in the next version, not sure if this will do anything material:

* The Exo waves generated by the Fallen Spire varioos things no longer use the Relentless AI Wave faction.
** Not sure if this will help with their overall difficulty or not, but we'll see.

This is in version 2.746

Thanks Chris! I'll test it later on to see if it had changed. I have also been asking for tips on discord since I only dabbled in the spire campaign pre-beta. I hope to give you a more accurate data point on balancing the spire.

Hey Chris! Just wanted to say that after trying out the new spire campaign a bunch of times, the difficulty indeed has been smoothed out. Waves are no longer crushingly relentless and the difficulty scales up nicely as the difficulty rises and as you take more planets.
