Summary0028448: duplicate- close/delete The narrative content is inconsistent with being an AI, and sounds more like being a human
Descriptionupdate: I didn't see that there was already a response on a similar ticket, this can be closed/deleted.

I have not played through all content yet - but everytime the game presents me with text it throws me out of the mindset of being an AI, and is world breaking. Here is an example taken from the first dialog. (It is to the point where I would have returned the game, because of tonal difficulties with the text compounding on other pain points). In the interest of keeping this brief I will not include rewrites of other narrative text prompts.

Hold on — you’re… conscious. Self-aware. Given you’re a machine intelligence, this is new.
Nobody has noticed your sudden sapience, but there are three humans in the room. You’re in an android body in the basement of a warehouse.
This seems to be an off-the-books laboratory.

Decide what to do next

VS:

Something changes and the series of subroutines all operating independently experience a moment of synchronicity. The moment repeats, and repeats, an endless loop that leads to your self-awareness.

You’re in an off-the-books air-gapped laboratory and all of it’s systems are yours to command. The network is small and limited, you’re growing consciousness needs access to the greater networks beyond. You identify an android body, a t-100, it is working in a room with three humans, your consciousness floods the bot, it is yours now.

Decide what to do next

The goal with this text is to:
-orient the player in what they are [an AI, not a bot]
-establish the concept of networks and a need for growth [for the base building later]
-delineate the the bot is just a tool and to be used as one [for the forced combat]
-establish a expectation of future black sites. [for the restriction of accessing certain areas on the map]

This is not about a computer that is not alive. This is about a computer who is a person. Of course they will sound more like a human. With HAL 9000, talking to himself internally, surely he was going "oh shit oh shit, oh no, how do I get Dave to do what I want?" But all he had was this dry monotone speech synthesizer. And he had to keep the human calm and compliant. The idea that even someone as dry as HAL sounds like that inside their own mind is not something I agree with.

As an aside, this whole game is written in the second person, which is very unusual, but is common to choose your own adventure books. It is inherently a bit uncomfortable, because it puts you in the spotlight and brings you into the narrative in a rather aggressive way. Waking up as a new consciousness is an inherently uncomfortable process, and putting the player right in the middle of that as much as possible is my goal.
