Summary0004750: Allow for spells to hit the same enemy mutiple times
DescriptionMinor suggestion that I feel would add a bit of height to the skill ceiling in combat, allowing for some awesome maneuvers.

Currently it seems that a single spell can only hit an enemy once. This means you can't do some really cool tactical moves, for example, some things that I've done that would have worked awesome if you could hit a mob multiple times with the same spell:

Flying microbosses that can be knocked back: Cast creeping death, just before it hits launch a ball lighting, so that it impacts just after the creeping death, and knocks the mob back into the path of the creeping death again.

Flying bosses in general, especially effective on the bats in caves : As the bat(s) approach from above, launch a rock directly up at them, so that it hits them on the way up (and would hit them on the way down again..)

There's probably many more cool things you could do with new spells too (There's a suggestion for a boomerang spell somewhere I think?).

I realize the issue is you wouldn't want a single spell to decimate an enemy simply because they are running in the same direction it is and getting hit multiple times, so the implementation would need to handle that somehow, but that hopefully isn't impossible. I'd guess that only allowing secondary hits once the spell has left the hitbox of a mob for ~ 1/2 a second might work? Maybe limit it to max 2 hits on a mob or something? (haven't run into a situation where I have pulled off more than that yet - possibly some amazing bat kiting around a creeping death might manage this...)

Some spells kind of do this already, like ice cross, where there are multiple damage zones that can hit a large hitbox (like the skelebot boss) multiple times. If this applied for all spells, some of the slower ones like creeping death could annihilate bosses quickly.

Yep, hence my consideration of that and a suggestion for a possible way around that :-P

Though you do bring up a good point - is it even intended that abilities with mutiple damage zones should be especially effective on larger enemies?

I don't think that this would work well -- a single projectile can only hit each enemy once at present, and the reason that's the case is that otherwise you wind up with enemies getting hit far too much by one projectile. We've experimented with various ways of handling this sort of thing, and right now I don't think there's a better overall way to do it.

This is actually something we decided to change in 0.556, as we figured out a clever way to make this work that I hadn't thought of at the time.
