Summary0006058: Shadow Bats are annoying
DescriptionShadow bats are the most annoying bosses, and not in a good way. Their range of shadow is very large, and the fact that they attack you by touching you means you can't dodge them. Since you can't see anything when they approach you, the only working strategy I've found is to sit and hit them every time they attack. In general, I think it's not a good idea to take away the player's maneuverability, and that's what they do.

My suggestion: decrease the shadow to a very small range, and make the bats mostly invisible with a small outline. They'll then be harder to spot than an average bat, but not as annoying as they are now.

I don't mind them myself, except for one case where I get chased into a hole with a small entrance and then can't find the way out because of the shadow. That is a sucky way to die.

My tactic when it comes to shadowbats is: Tab-target them and concentrate on moving around. Hold down your spell-casting button. I generally only get hit once or twice when dealing with shadowbats.

Toll: I don't play with tab-targeting. To me that's like an 'auto-aim' function in FPSs which is basically a 'cheat' function, since you can hit the monsters from anywhere. I play with keyboard-only controls, which I feel reduce the load on my brain and fingers and maximize my control while keeping the challenge of hitting monsters present (sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm showing off -- I'm just explaining my rationale for finally deciding on this control scheme). Anyway it's possible that my control scheme is deficient when it comes to these darn Shadow Bats.

Which brings me to another point, which is that not having a standardized control scheme is a problem since everybody's experience is very different. I've mentioned this in another mantis report. Not only are the players playing different games, the devs are playing 2 different games too.

Thanks!

* The darkness intensity around the giant shadow bats has been cut in half. When we changed the darkness model granularity a few releases back, this made the giant shadow bats incredibly more opaque. At first this seemed like maybe a fun thing, but with more playtime it became obvious that it was, instead, rather annoying.

That's not a problem, that's a feature. The same is massively more true in AI War: it's rare that any two players are playing the same game there, with so many different settings and so on. We're pretty used to that after almost three years. :)

Where possible, I just make them chase me up and down platform-ladders, and pound them with miasma whip when they get close. I don't bother with auto-targetting or anything - I find it tends to miss fast moving enemies in most cases anyway!
