Summary0006335: UI doesn't respond after first order
DescriptionAlong a similar vein to 006334:
I have a starship selected in system A while viewing from the galaxy map. I order it to System B. It goes. I then order it to system C. It does NOTHING. I can right click all I want, I never hear the confirmation blip and the starship does nothing. I need to re-select it to be able to issue a new order. This is /very/ annoying.

This is not a known bug. Are you playing in Steam? Have you recently brought up the steam overlay or alt-tabbed out of the game?

If so, most likely you are running into yet another fun bug from unity engine. This one is the "held down key" bug. Next to your cursor your probably see "alt" or "shift" written there, because the game has detected you are holding those down for a suspiciously long time. Tap that key again and things will then work as you expect.

This could be an issue of the ship getting "unselected" while in viewing the galaxy map. There is actually no way I know to tell what you have selected in galaxy map view (see 0003586 which would make this situation much clearer) so if you think you have something selected but don't, you'll click to move your units and nothing happens. I seem to recall if I order my units to travel and they change systems (I'm looking at the galaxy map the whole time) I lose their selection (but don't know I have nothing selected since I'm viewing the galaxy map) and can't order them anymore. Or something like that. I have it creep up sometimes, but pretty rarely.

I've never used Steam in my life (ewww, DRM!).
After further investigation the problem this problem only manifests after the ship has left the system. I rather foolishly assumed that as the system was still glowing with the "selected" thing that the ship was still selected. Apparently the ship is deselected the second it leaves the system.
This issue is a realy pain with large groups of ships!

Okay, got it.

In general, the cardinal rule of AI War is that it is a collection of battlefields, not one big battlefield. Therefore, all of the RTS rules apply within each battlefield (selecting ships, etc), but not across them. General rule of thumb would be to not issue orders that you don't mean, if you're wanting a bunch of ships to go somewhere together.

Been like that for three years now, and it's come up a few times but not with any significant ire like this before. I think it's just something you have to get used to, if you were expecting it to work a different way. I'm not sure, but I'm surprised at the heat of your reaction to it, anyhow, for such a mature title.

Heh, you think that's heated, see my addendum to the other ticket. :-) But yes, this has quite thrown me. Thanks for the clarification and I'll give it another try tomorrow.

I would counter-point by asking - what if I want to get my fleet from System A-F but during the long slow transit System P is attacked? Using this method there's no easy way for me to re-target my fleet during the flight (yep that's happened, several times and as noted in the other thread, this is just my first game).

Generally speaking, it's not too big a deal:

1) You're using group-move, so everything is together. You go and select the ships on whatever planet they are on, and re-target them.

2) You're using transports, and they all move about the same speed, so you go to the planet they are on, and you select and retarget.

3) You're not using group move, so ships are just getting there each as fast as they can individually do so. This means they might be on three (or whatever) planets, which is annoying, but that's what you told them to do. So you go to each planet, hit the number key that is associated with the ships in question, hit tab, and give them the order.

There's not particularly much to it.
