Summary0006483: hacking completed but no message or ability to select which ships I want
DescriptionThis is a multiplayer game. I did the hacking, and I thought that when my friend planted a colony ship, we each would get to choose what ships we want. Neither of us chose anything, and it gave both of us armor rotters. Note that this is level I because I'm doing teaching.

Did you make sure that both the planet and the ARS was still in AI hands during the entire duration of the hack? Not sure if it makes that clear in the description, but that is necessary to hack it.

Also, the unlock chosen is shared by all players, instead of each player getting their own unlock choice.
Perhaps later the ARS unlock system can be expanded to allow different unlocks for each player.

And about the message thing, I would agree. Both K-raiding and the ARS-hacking need a message of some kind to appear when they are done.
The superterminal, with no concrete "done" state, I can see keep going and going without prompt.

I opened the save, and I see a knowledge-hacker on the enemy planet with the hacking warning, but I don't see a ship-design-hacker anywhere. The former steals knowledge, the latter does the ARS-reprogramming (I wanted to combine them into one unit but it would have required new UI to select which thing it was doing and thus have been a lot more fiddly for everyone). The SDH is built from the same menu, one column to the right (same column as the survey ship, if playing with FS on). The main telltale is that its description talks about hacking an AI Advanced Research Station.

The Knowledge-Hacker has to sit still for 15 seconds to start stealing knowledge, the Ship-Design-Hacker has to sit still for 10 minutes, but once it's done that on the target planet the hack is done and you get the message.

I'll make a note to have the "AI responding to hacking on {0}" message specify knowledge-hack or sd-hack.

Or were you using an SD-hacker and it still didn't work?

Okay, I thought that the knowledge hacker was the hacking device. It said on the top left that it was hacking, I had met all of the conditions... this is just confusion over which hacking was being performed.

Also, you might want to make the message say, "Hacking for AI ship schematics" or something like that rather than using acronyms.

Descriptions could be cleaned up some for clarity. If it was not for the forums, I would have no idea what the new hacker stuff is.

For 5.030:

* The "AI is responding to your hacking on (planet name)" messages now specify whether it's knowledge-hacking or ship-design hacking, to avoid confusion. If both are actually happening on one planet, it will display both messages.

* Now picking a bonus type from the ARS tab of the tech menu after a ship-design-hack is a per-player decision in multiplayer (and in singleplayer, but the difference isn't noticeable unless other players join).
** If you think you might have players joining later, don't forget which planets had the ARS unlocks :)
** Note that normal (no hacking) capture of an ARS still gives the same bonus type to all players, which gives ship-design hacking an additional advantage in multiplayer (though remember there's still only 3 types to pick from per ARS, so it's not all that much of an advantage).

Thanks for the feedback :)
