Summary0006546: Remove 'no map' option from cycling
DescriptionWhen you cycle the top left map size, one setting is to have no map at all. I've found this to be disorienting in the middle of exploration/battle. If I'm playing with the map size, it's to see the details of the local chunk (usually a cave). I then want the map to go back to being small, usually when something attacks me. But I have to remember to hit 'm' enough times to bring the map back, otherwise my navigation aid is gone. This is surprisingly confusing and annoying in the heat of battle. I think the map should always stay visible at the top left. If someone wants to completely remove the map, that's usually a preference that should be set by either a menu setting or another key.

I'm inclined to agree. I'd rather have only the options of small map and medium map, myself. The massively screen-filling map and the non-existent map are equally pointless in my eyes. But maybe something with a teeny screen would need the giant map? Don't know. Honestly if the tiny map could be tweaked to show doors a little better, then I wouldn't even need the medium one.

Sometimes I like to have no map, usually if I'm fighting something in the upper left corner of the map...

Maybe a separate key for getting rid of the map, but, use M for cycling the sizes? But then, do we really need another key?

I think we do need another key or just not have that option. It should be unbound by default, but be there as an option. The main use case is zooming in the map to see detail. How likely is it that you have something in the exact spot the map is in, and that the smallest map isn't a good enough solution? By that token, you could have something in the lower left that's obscured by the ability bar or the rest of the interface -- and there's no option to remove that. So if we can live with not removing the interface, we can live with a tiny map in the top left.

Was looking for another issue, and found this one. Resolved now, I think?

I don't think it is -- is it? I think the map still disappears when you cycle through sizes.

One solution would be to have a zoom in and a zoom out button. Then you could make it disappear if you zoom all the way out. Cycling is too confusing.

Just saw a note in the other mantis report. I haven't seen the minimal size setting yet, so disregard my last comment for now.
