Summary0006889: Single player -> multiplayer -> single player loses first character?
DescriptionI've been playing single player for a while and wanted to try playing with a friend. So I started up a multiplayer server and used my existing world file from single player.

It asked me to choose a new character, which I thought was kind of weird. I picked one and messed around for a while. I didn't have any enchants or spells or anything that I had in single player, but the continents and settlements were still the same.

Then I went back to single player and I'm still controlling the character I used in multiplayer. I had to restore a backup save file to get my good character back.

I'm confused to how multiplayer is supposed to work. It seemed to keep the same character each time I rejoined the server or went back to single player AFTER the first time I launched multiplayer.

Is there some kind of old-save-version issue preventing me from carrying my single player character data into multiplayer?

Did you by any chance change your name in settings->Network from default to something else in between?

If so, changing network name creates a new 'account' on the world.

Your post suggests that you didnt, but then again i'm not sure if a back-up could change your network name or if you did something else you might've not mentioned that could reset your network name, so i'd just like to make sure.
Sorry in advance if you are offended by this.

The name in your settings file is what would control your linkage, yeah.

I had my name set before ever trying multiplayer, BUT I think I created the world for single player before I set the name. Would that order matter?

(Order: Create world, play single player, set player name, play multiplayer, play single player)

Yep. If you had a solo world and changed the name, then opened the solo world, you'd get the same behavior. You didn't lose anything, you're just playing under a different account now; both are there.

This is handy if, say, you and your spouse were both wanting to play the game solo, but in the same world, on the same computer at just different times of the day.

Well, I've had the network name set to the same thing for a couple weeks now while I've been playing single player. So theoretically my account should have been the same for that whole time, right?

Yes, it should have. That's pretty odd.

I've attached the world file I was using before this occurred, and the settings file (minus the line with the hashed license key) in case this helps you track this oddity down.

I can reproduce the problem 100% by restoring this world file, playing single player, hosting multiplayer, then single player.

Thanks! We'll see what we can find out about why it's doing this. I can also repro it on other worlds, so it's definitely an issue.

For 0.923:

* Fixed some old logic in Load Game where if there was no player matching your customer ID and username you would be given the character of the first player account in the world file (but if you later logged into the same world in MP it would create a new account for you and when you went back to singleplayer it would give you the character you'd used in MP). Now it creates a new player account when loading a world where you don't have a matching player account, so transitions between SP and MP and such should be much smoother.

Thanks :)
