Toll, are you running ver .919?

Never mind Toll, it appears that the original issue is still an issue.

This is very useful information -- it means that the problem is NOT chunk gen anymore. I did fix that, as I thought. If it were chunk-gen, the multiplayer client could never have this happen, because a mp client does not gen any chunks. So it's something in the simulation itself.

You're welcome i suppose :)

And sorry for forgetting to add the product version, it is indeed .919.
Was actually about leave the house IRL when this happened and decided it would be best to post this before heading out so that it was still fresh in my mind.

not that any of that actually matters in regard to the crash itself

Capable of reproducing it!!!
It appears to be the same shard on continent 5 that always does it for me.

its the second 'the deep' from the settlement when heading west. hold on i'll see if i can give coordinates

coordinates:
Bleeding Gulf 65, 15

Entering the first surface chunk 3 times causes it

added info:
started up the game, went on Toll's server.
in settlement, went to world map:
1.071.584kb (didnt change)

went into the 65,15 for the first time:
1.437.500 and going up by jumps of 30kb less than a second

i left shortly afterwards:
1.349.000 and going up by jumps of 50kb less than a second

There is something really messed up with that sector

also:
did toll take the server down shortly ago? when i went back into the chunk it took a bit and then i got dc'd, and now i cant get back on the server.

Sweet, thanks for that info! Josh, can you see if you can duplicate that wandering around in another "the deep" tile on a single player instance that we can test against more reliably?

976.720 kb in use

went in:
1.360.000ish in use, and going up by steps of 16 to 20kb/s with the chunk paused.

went out:
1.089.448 and going up in steps of around 50kb/s

went back in:
1.455.964 and going up in steps of 16 to 20kb/s

jumped in a third time but it loaded really fast (for once) so i accidentally pressed the left arrow so i went straight out again, when i tried to go in a fourth time i got the fatal error again.

1.643.948 kb in use at time of failure.

something is sucking the life out of the client on that chunk.

edit: that was still the same chunk, was doing another attempt on it before i read your message.
I'll try another the deep chunk

edit on the edit:
I assume Josh was actually a name, and not asking me to do it? :P

Yeah, that note was for me. :) Chris, I've not been able to actually reproduce this one yet. I'll keep trying, but in the mean time, maybe we could see of Toll is around and grab the world file?

And by the way, thanks for the sleuthing. Keith and I are both sorting through code like crazy, trying to figure out where this is happening. I've cleaned up a lot of little things that are now minorly more efficient but which weren't our memory leak. He's working on instrumenting the code so that we can see what, precisely, is even leaking. Ah for being able to just use a memory profiler, but unity doesn't really support that well.

Absolutely, Josh -- if you can run with that one, I'd appreciate it.

I'm around, yeah. Pretty much every world (both SP and MP) I've tested with has had the increase in RAM though... Which world do you want? My MP world, the old SP world or the new (and a lot smaller) SP world?

I think there are multiple issues. One is on chunk-gen, and I _may_ have just solved that one. It's certainly much improved in my local tests, anyhow.

Then there's this issue with stuff counting up like crazy during play, that silverhound is reporting. That's something that is clearly happening client-side, and so it has no possibility of being chunk-gen related since that's server/solo only.

So it really seems like we have (at least) two issues here.

Oh, and to clarify: we want the MP world that silverhound is playing in, so that we can go the coordinates he specified so that we can hopefully see the same problem and then fix it.

Just sent Josh a PM with a link to the world! Want the link too, Chris/Keith? Since it can possibly be considered to contain private information (the first part of the key) I'd rather not post it publically; I don't mind people seeing my own unique number that way, but I don't want to decide for everyone else, heh.

I just grabbed his world, I'll test it here and see what happens. Thanks a bunch Toll!

No worries at all; if Josh finds something in there that he can duplicate, he can just email it to me. Thanks!

It's odd, and you might be right about there being multiple issues. When I load Toll's world in SP, and go to the region that silverhound mentioned, I don't see the constant increase min memory usage that he talks about.

When I run it as MP, I DO see that, in both the client and the server instances.

Chris, do you want me to e-mail you the whole world? Or just the chunk he mentions?

Oh joy, that's definitely not good news that it's MP-only for that part. Because there's definitely a part that is also happening in solo.

Yes, please email me the whole thing.

Yeah, that's not pleasant news.

I'm uploading to g-mail as I type this, you'll have the world shortly.

We're working on it -- it's tedious and slow work, but we've been cleaning up a lot of little side things as we go. Already things are _better_ than they were on the version you're playing on, but there's still a leak. Once we get this figured all the way out, hopefully in the next couple of hours, then things should (knock on wood) be better than they were prior to 0.916.

Yeah, sorry about this. But we are aware, and are working on it. It's derailed a couple of days of development at this point, blah.
