Summary0010114: Add checkpoints to longer levels
DescriptionIt's annoying to die after making it through like 4 buildings and having to redo everything. A simple, old-school suggestion: Add checkpoints to huge regions, or regions with lots of buildings. Maybe even have them likely to be right before and/or after a boss room, a classic couple of places to put a checkpoint. I dunno if there should be only 1 or possibly multiple checkpoints per level... But either way, this is how they could work: When you enter the region and you have a checkpoint available, you're given the option to start at the beginning or any of the checkpoints you've reached. If you have no checkpoints unlocked, you'll just start at the beginning.

An additional use of this feature could be to allow you to select the armory as a checkpoint when entering the overlord's keep.

I could possibly be okay with a checkpoint (or more likely a passage similar to the fortress passages) for after bosses. I would be against checkpoints right before boss fights. Perhaps an ammo/health cost for using those passages as well?

I feel like most of the regions are fairly short, so the occasional long ones add a bit of variety and challenge in trying to endure through them.

Some regions are too short, yeah. Regions with like 1 or 2 buildings aren't that bad, but if either has a boss then it'd probably deserve a checkpoint. 3 or more buildings probably should have a checkpoint, boss or not. Maybe it could try to calculate how long the region is, factoring in building length and weighing boss rooms heavily, and add a checkpoint if it's a certain minimum length. That would be a practical way to implement this.

It is frustrating to re-ran the whole long level after a failed henchman fight. You are itching to re-do the fight again, not to re-run already experienced content.

Madcow, mostly agree. The long ones can be refreshing, with some being WAY too short. (I mean like a jungle one I did, I ran and dodged and shot a little for like 20 seconds, and then the music stopped, wind blowing, and I was like "Already!?" and destroyed it, and I spent like 30 seconds in that tile)

After the boss kinda defeats the purpose though. Just before would be better, but at full ammo cost. You can warp directly to the boss room you've already visited, but only if you're willing to give up all of your ammo (and try to resupply on enemies just before, or try to do without, instead of rerunning the whole map)

If there's a need for a checkpoint, then the area is either really special (ie skelebot research facility, which basically does have a checkpoint with the vents, as does the overlord keep) or is probably longer than it is supposed to be. I've been working on shortening things so that there's nothing egregiously long, but if any ones come up that seem egregious then please let us know!
