Summary0010488: Canoe Conundrum
DescriptionSo, can we have an NPC Follower get into a separate boat and follow you when you board one?

No, I thought not. :)

I just realized that now that Mary follows Darrell around (or vice-versa), one is stranded in the compound as the other makes an escape to Phoenix Forest.

Since I don't believe we can have NPC_Boat_Follower, I have a few ideas that can fix the story. Let me know which you prefer:

A.) When the player stands on the tile containing the canoe, a message appears saying "I'll climb in behind you" and the follower is removed from the game. When the player disembarks from that boat on the other side, the follower is restored. This is tricky, of course, because the follower should also be restored if the player gets back out without crossing the river.

B.) This is the option I'm leaning toward. The scene opens up with Mary already on the safe side of the river, with her canoe, and Darrell standing on the dangerous side, with his. After their conversation, the Grays appear like always, but only Darrell needs to board a boat. The only catch is that I wanted Mary to have woken Darrell up with news about running into Willis, but in this scenario, Darrell spots her return while already looking for the kids.

C.) The bridge crossing that river could be always fixed instead of always broken, so no boat is necessary to cross. However, I really like the idea that the bridge was broken long ago to keep Grays out.

D.) The parents' opening story actually begins at the start of Phoenix Forest, where Darrell has caught up with Mary after not finding the kids on his own.

This is a great example of the sort of scope creep I want to avoid. ;) We could spent literally 5-10 hours between the two of us chasing this one minor cutscene-related detail, at the expense of much more important stuff on both sides of us.

I suggest that you go with option B or something similar -- you could have the two parents split up before they reach the river crossing. Mary could go to check on the "hidden boat to the south" or something and exit on the screen before. So she wakes him up and so forth like you want, but then by the time you get to the river in question, she has crossed to the other side in her own canoe already, and only Darrell is left to cross now.

Yeah, I knew we weren't going to invest any time into it -- I was joking about the extra functionality. :) Just wanted to make sure you didn't have any silver bullets or strong opinions about this transition.

There isn't any scripting of the parents together inside their house; Mary having awoken him was assumed to have happened before the scene starts. It's just a river scene, with the option to check the backyard. So, I'll stick with option B, which is close to what we already have and will work well for both One Player and Two Player modes.

Makes sense to me!

Okay, I finished this by placing both characters on the safe side of the river as the sequence begins. This way, the NPC has already crossed, no matter which character is being played. Their dialog suggests they should travel east, but player 1 (or two players) can go back across and see the backyard if desired.
