Summary | 0011083: Shadow Tunneler
Description | This starship, originally invented by the Shadow Spire, contains a fantastic and experimental piece of technology: An engine that can "tunnel" small, temporary wormholes just big enough for the ship itself to pass through. Mechanically, this means that Shadow Tunnelers completely disregard the traditional wormhole network. When ordered to move to a (non-adjacent) planet, they fly out to deep space, charge their drive for a short duration, and then simply appear in deep space on the target planet (roughly at the distance counterwave posts appear). The only limitation is that they can't make blind jumps - the player must have at least one unit (with vision) on the target planet. Combat-wise they would fill a raiding roll, specialized in hit-and-run tactics much like raid starships, although not nearly as fast; they are better at getting TO a planet, but more vulnerable once on the planet. The fact that their tunneler drive has a warmup period means they are also vulnerable to being killed while trying to escape. AI shadow tunnelers would build up numbers and then teleport as a group to a vulnerable-looking human world (probably with a "inbound shadow tunnelers in 3:00" type warning for fairness). Alternatively, the AI ones could be given a unique ability to bring other ships with them, basically turning them into living counterwave posts that attack once they enter threatfleet. Needless to say, either way the AI should not get many of them. :) A variant on this idea would be to give the tunnelers (both human and AI) the ability to transport a small number of fleet ships (but NOT starships, for obvious reasons).

As always, the AI will get an exponential amount more than the humans ever will. Cross planet attacks, Exo attacks, and alerted worlds will get the most. And when told to attack the game winning target (or in this case game losing) is now the easiest. Pray that you aren't fighting a technologist. We already have a slue of ships that make a bad day for the humans, I don't think we need another that is devastating in the hands of AI and pathetic when used by the player |
