Summary0011668: Fixing the "slog."
DescriptionI find there are time where I've "won" the game (by getting the points requirement) by turn 40 of 90, which means I have 50 turns to swat flies and inflate my score. Or just wall everything off with mountains and wait.

Here are three ideas to curb this dull waiting period:

-Add an option for an Age duration of 20 turns. Score requirements for this fast mode would need to scale of course.

-When the final required score is achieved, the game ends automatically 5-10 turns later.

-"Ragnarok," a Norse myth token that ends the game 5-10 turns later (essentially skips the turn to the last turn of the game at the end of the countdown).

     Other potential effects of Ragnarok:
       * Only usable if the final score is already reached.
       * A new Woe happens every 1-2 turns. Any Woes with durations don't expire.
       * Several myth units spawn on both sides every turn.
       * All gods go berserk ala Poseidon's Chariot.
       * All human units get 3x to all stats.
       * Any human unit that dies is resurrected as a random myth unit next turn.
       * Bandits go berserk: 1 fort appears per turn and spawns a unit every turn.
       * All human units prioritize enemy buildings.

Point is, it'd let me double down and end the game if I feel like I've already won it!

Careful there. Heimdall would like to announce it first by blowing his horn and killing all non-God units. :P

Also, playing on at least Expert in all categories will definitely alleviate your boredom. To me the Normal game is fairly easy.

Even Hard is a very far cry from Normal, due to the veterancy system. Also, don't forget that you can set the score requirements really high--on the highest setting, you'll be placing plenty of tokens to avoid boredom. Besides, part of the fun is seeing how high you can push your score without losing. Having the game end early would be disappointing for score chasing diehards *cough* me *cough*.

Note also that the difficulties are not necessarily final. It is entirely possible that Arcen will increase the difficulties to match. In theory, Normal should be like AI War's difficulty 7--the 'average' level. I suspect that it is a little bit lower than that. The score system will probably be adjusted further as well.

In 1.008:

* It is now possible to have lightning-fast games that are only 20 turns per round.

Also I would like to point out that with the changes in 1.008, things should be more tense in general. However, I also like the idea of an Armageddon ability very much. :)

All right, last thing that should fix this. :)

* Added a new direct ability: Armageddon
** You cannot place this until the final score requirement has been met (and if you are playing with the score requirements off, then you can't place it at all...).
** Armageddon lasts for ten turns, after which point the game ends (in a victory if you still meet all the victory conditions, or else in a loss). During the Armageddon, TWENTY new bandit keeps appear every turn in addition to whatever else would normally be going on! Some of these keeps will even appear within the boundaries of your towns, replacing your buildings (just never replacing your town centers). Only the most prepared will survive!
** For extra "fun," you can cause multiple armageddons at once. When the first one's timer runs you, the game will end.
** This is another ability that costs the new Soul Imprints resource: a whopping 200, in this case.
** The idea here is that if you have already reached a point where you have won the game, you may not wish to just ride out your time until the game ends based on the full turn count running out. If you've gotten things to a point where you are in a dominant position and are just pressing End Turn a bunch, that's BORING. Of course, if you're barely hanging on, it's exciting all the way.
*** What this addresses is the boring cases. If you're in a dominant position, then use Armageddon to end the game early, but doing so in a way that is exciting and and potentially quite fatal. Either way it's over quickly. ;)
** This also balances between those who are playing for high scores versus those who are playing for victories. Some players want to play all the way to the end in order to maximize their scores on the high scoreboards. Others could not care less. Armageddon is potentially a big source of score, but not as much as 30 turns of full combat most likely. So even there there is choice.
** It may be that Armageddon is currently too difficult to survive in most cases, but we've been able to survive it reliably with Paranoia hitting two turns into the chaos, and eight intact towns at the start of it all. We'd rather start too hard than too easy, anyhow; so if 200 new bandit keeps turns out to be too much, then we'll see what we can see. ;)
