Summary0001262: Inconsistencies in ship names
DescriptionThere appear to be (at least) three different names for a ship:

Full name (used on the large ship tooltips)
Sort/Wave name (used for wave warning info and as the sort key for F1/Planet summary)
Abbreviation (used on game setup map, perhaps elsewhere)

This makes things a bit confusing to players who are still familiarizing themselves with the game:

1. Seeing "30 Bombards" for the wave warning info instead of "Zenith Bombardment Ships"

2. "Shield Bearer" shows up as "FF Bearer" on setup map.

3. Ships in the F1/Planet summary list that are sorted by their wave-name rather than their displayed name when you mouse-over them:

Name (Sort/Wave) [Abbrev]

Zenith AutoBomb (AutoBomb) [Z AutoBomb]
Zenith Bombardment Ship (Bombard) [Z Bombardment]
Heavy Bomber (Bomber)
Neinzul Youngling Commando (Commando) [Yng Commando]
Vorticular Cutlass (Cutlass)
Standard Fighter (Fighter)
Missile Frigate (Frigate)
Tachyon MicroFighter (MicroFighter)
Neinzul Youngling Nanoswarm (Nanoswarm) [Yng Nanoswarm]
Space Plane (Plane)
Shield Bearer (Shield Bearer) [FF Bearer]
Electric Shuttle (Shuttle) [Electric Shuttle]
Space Tank (Tank)
Neinzul Youngling Tiger (Tiger) [Yng Tiger]
Neinzul Youngling Vulture (Vulture) [Yng Vulture]
Neinzul Youngling Weasel (Weasel) [Yng Weasel]

(Inconsistently, the rest of the Zenith ships are properly sorted in the Z's.)

I kinda get what you're saying, but the FF Bearer is the only one that really makes sense to me. I mean, everyone is going to know that cutlass= vorticular cutlass, and plane= space plane, etc.

Giegue his issue is that without prior familiarity with these names, some of them could cause confusion which I completely agree with. Making the game more accessible to new players is always a good thing.

I have to agree on this. While I pretty much know the ships by now, it's sometimes odd to see abbreviations in wave warnings and the like.

Also, on a slightly related note, the word 'Zenith' in front of the ship names seems to serve no other purpose than noting that it's an expansion unit, which is kind of odd. It's confusing to read 'Z this' and 'Z that', when they could just as well go without the Z to begin with. I'd be happy, and a bit more content with just calling 'em Bombardments, Autobombs, Beam Frigates, etc. Plus the expansion ships would blend in with the other ships better if their names didn't stand out so well from the originals. The affiliation with an expansion could be noted somewhere else. Maybe just a 'Zenith ship.' in the tooltip or something.

Note: I don't have CoN or LotS yet, so I don't know how those ships are named, but hopefully not 'N this' and 'S that' ;p In that case the originals better be renamed to 'A this' or 'O that' or 'V this' as well, to signify AI War, Original or Vanilla. ;)

Nitpickery to the max!

A lot of this stuff isn't going to change, because for clarity and flavor reasons we have a full name to units, which simply must be abbreviated in many parts of the interface to keep the interface small. To a few specific points:

1. The shield bearers still being called FF Bearer in the abbreviation isn't intended.

2. Probably removing the Z in front of some of them would be a thing to do, that would be more consistent with CoN and such.

3. The actual "Zenith" in the name of those ships denotes their origin, and the fact that they are made out of organic materials and thus were weak to the acid sprayer. There are plenty of things in the base game with Zenith, Neinzul, or Spire in the name, for example -- it's simply grouping those alien ships by where they came from (which also speaks somewhat to their types of powers and definitely their visual styling), not by expansion. Though each expansion, so far, has focused on a single race that won't always be the case.

Just removing the 'Z' abbreviation would make me happy. It's just such a striking difference in the midst of all the other ship names. When using a full name though, I don't so much mind the 'Zenith' part. It's much clearer than a 'Z', and overall looks better. Didn't really realize the Zenith had similar weaknesses either, so it's actually somewhat informative. :)

I guess I was stretching it there with that feedback. Sorry about that. ;p

However, maybe reconsidering some of the abbreviations would be in order though. Like Bombardment/Bombard. Bombardment seems to be 11 characters long word, and Microfighter is 12, so clearly 'Bombardment' would be usable just fine, and wouldn't either take much more space character or width -wise. Seems like Bombard is an abbreviation that isn't needed in this case, IMO.

It's also easy to mistake Bombards for Bombers at a really quick glance, though admittedly I can't recall that happening recently.

There's only so much one can do in terms of consistency, because of the need to abbreviate on the short names in particular, but there was definite room for improvement. I've gone through them all now, and have made the following changes (note that I left or added the Yng prefix, as I think that's super relevant given their lifespan concerns):
