The area displayed is the area of the weapon you currently have selected. The fuel tank is irrelevant to the current logic used to display that area.

A few questions about what exactly it's supposed to do:

1) If the weapon you're using will not kill the fuel tank on that shot, should it display the fuel tank's explosion range, even though that's actually misleading as enemies standing on those squares will not be at all affected by the shot?

2) If the weapon you're using has AOE of its own, should it show the splash marker on any square in either splash area?

Sorry, I am not sure whether I get what you are saying right.

How is it that the screenshot shows the area of the currently selected weapon? A laser rifle has no blast radius hasn't it?

What I would like to see is twofold:
- Remove the attack range 1 from the fuel tank tooltip as it is misleading
- Show the AoE of the fuel tank explosion if checking the "attack range" of the fuel tank using the CTRL mouseover

Regarding your questions:
1)
I think always showing the blast radius of the fuel tank even if the next shot might not kill it outright is okay (how should it know which weapon I will actually use to shoot it after all?). I guess even new player's should be able to figure that one out after the first time they shot a fuel tank without destroying it ; ).

2)
Incorporating the blast radius of the weapon used to shoot the tank would be misleading to me, as it would mix the functions of the SHIFT (the player AoE) and CTRL (the bot AoE) mouse-overs. Just showing the fuel tank's own blast radius is fine!

Keith: Holding Ctrl while mousing over an enemy now shows their attack range, which is what is being discussed here. I think you probably missed that while you were out, apologies.

The attack range of the fuel tanks is desired to be shown as its on-death explosion radius, and the same thing for EMP bots and BombBots, etc, since they don't use traditional weapons. This is unrelated to your own attack ranges.

For 0.922:

* Changed the usual "when control is held" logic for mousing over the fuel tank to display the aoe splash radius rather than the attack range (the latter wasn't even used for the fuel tank's "weapon").
