Summary0012701: UI buttons are kind of inconsistent in item management screens
DescriptionThe three inventory screens -- inventory, store, and customization -- have somewhat non-standard and inconsistent usage of buttons.

The inventory screen has "Return to customization" on the left, and "Switch to store" on the right. The customization screen has "Return to city map" on the left, and "Inventory" on the right. The store screen has "Return to city map" on the left, and "Switch to inventory" on the right.

I think that there is no reason you shouldn't be able to go directly between customization and the store. And I think the buttons should just say "City map", "Customization", "Store", and "Inventory".

And it would also improve the UI to have the buttons consistently the same size, and in the same place, on all screens.

Think about this bug tracker website for example -- the important links like "Main," "My View", "My Account" and "Logout" are in the same place on every page, and they don't contain words like "Return to" or "Switch to" which don't give you any information.

It may be a trivial change, but I have to stop for a second whenever I say "I want this exo to have better shields" while I (re)discover there's no way to get to the store from the customization screen. And that gives me a lingering feeling of "this game's UI needs work," and that sort of thing affects a user's overall impression of the game.

A bit of additional information:

From the city map, you can go to customization and store by clicking on an exo's icon or store icon, but this is a different way of getting to these screens than is used in any of the other screens. Maybe these graphical icons should be used on all screens -- they're smaller and you might be able to squeeze all exos, store, inventory, and city on every screen. (I don't think inventory has its own icon, maybe your commander icon could be used to go to the inventory if you don't want to create new assets at this point?)

For 0.930:

* Customization, Inventory, and Store screens:
** The navigation buttons at the bottom have been revamped to be consistent in placement, size, and text from screen to screen.
** The missing transitions (customization <-> store, inventory out to city map) have been added.
** The Inventory and Store main areas (that display the parts) have been enlarged so that the overall window area and positioning (and thus nav button positioning) is the same as the Customization window.


Wow, it feels a lot better now, thank you for the insightful comments.

I didn't try to use the image buttons, though that may be something to consider in the future (I definitely get how keeping the same sidebar the whole way through would help). I think for now having the switch from map-to-menu be a switch from image-to-text is ok because we can't really put the image buttons in the exact same placement as they are on the city map without totally reworking the positioning of stuff on the customization screen (which is really bumping up against the minimum dimension specs of 1024x720).

But this is much better, thanks :) Please take a look when 0.930 is out, and if there are any other specific suggestions for polishing it please reopen this or open a new mantis record.
