Did you set your mercenary space dock as a control group to only build when above a certain number of resources? If so, then all the parasites also share that group. Remove them from the group by setting the dock as the only member of the group again and it will fix it.

Option B, how much did you set "expensive constructions" at and did you set it so engineers do not help with them.

All options point to CTRLs and how you use them. In my experience engineers work fine with mercenary parasites, but controls may be off a bit.

No worries, I often forget this too, and I use controls to do the same thing. Don't feel bad. I think we all reported this at some point... followed by request that there could be a setting where units built by a control group don't inherit the control group. The latter hasn't been added yet, but if you chime in, our numbers grow :)
