Do scientists only stay for one research session? Because if so, I probably should've picked a long one. Whoops.

Did you guys mention that scientists and manufacturers were one use only during the black market tutorials, because I think I missed that. >.<

Happens as well if cancelling a research dispatch (i.e. the goons go to waste in this case without warning!). I think a hint for the player is in order here = /...

As coded, it only consumes those goons that are actually "used" to save months. Further, all goons used are applied immediately at the beginning of the dispatch, and the partial progress is saved if you attempt that specific tech (for that race), outpost (for that race), or building (for that planet) again.

Do you have a save demonstrating that it doesn't work this way?

As far as I've experienced, only the last goon will get partially wasted (ie, if it'd take 12.1 goons to get to 5 months, 13 will be used), or in the VERY limitted case where you fly off from a research mission, then research (or steal) it somewhere else (which I've never actually tried, so can't even say for sure here). Otherwise, your "progress" is saved, so if you drop those 13 goons, spend a month researching, take a break, then come back, you still only have 4 months remaining (so the goons did their job, and you're still getting credit for it without using any more goons).

I can confirm that bringing 50 science goons with you will let you do several proects in a row and walk away with some goons left over, as I do almost this very thing at the beginning of most of my games.

Ok, yea, those forms of "not getting a full goon's worth" are fine. You're never just losing them for nothing. And getting the tech through other means and thus making your partial progress redundant is also fine; it's a sensible outcome from pursuing the same goal in multiple different ways: some of the effort will be redundant.

Anyway, going to close this for now; if you see any cases of actual goon wastage please let us know :)
