Summary | 0014774: Boarines keep having civil wars; other races never seem to?
Description | I have no idea if this is intentional or not, but in every campaign I have played so far, the Boarines are constantly having civil wars that cull their population massively, especially early game. It has gotten to the point where I'm *shocked* if I see their population go over 20 million... though it tends to shortly go back to 1 million anyway once the next civil war inevitably starts. What causes these civil wars? I have never personally witnessed any other race have a civil war despite having -200 public order or lower on their worlds. Comparatively, I just started a new game with Boarines as my starting homeworld, and they had a civil war in the first 5 months of the game with only -4 public order! Does public order even have an effect on civil war frequency? Also, the 'chatter' ticker for when the Boarines have a civil war seems to imply there is something that the player can do to help/stop them from happening, but I've yet to figure out if there is some sort of special action I can take.

I have seen this as well. And they did not seem to go away after improving public order as well = /. Maybe it was not enough... |
Public order does affect this, but population density hitting equilibrium is the biggest thing. Boarines have a super low threshold for population density, and a high propensity for civil wars when that density is hit. The civil war will then last until half their population is gone. What sort of equilibrium levels are you seeing? |
More specifically, if you have a save where things seem off, please do share. :) |
I've noticed they seem to be hitting equilibrium and starting civil wars incredibly fast, too fast to actually make use of their isolationist behavior. Sadly I've been noticing it on my Ironman+Permadeath games, so no real save to upload. |

Chris, you said "Public order does affect this, but population density hitting equilibrium is the biggest thing." Does the game actually tell you this anywhere? And if not... http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=14770 Also, how do I see a race's/planet's population density equilibrium? sounds important |
Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure what test conditions I can give you for this report, since its just an ongoing thing that has applied across all of my campaigns, but I just uploaded a save near the beginning of a new campaign that I think illustrates the problem; I've let the simulation run 3 times for several years from that save, and the Boarines just can't seem to climb above 20m population, spamming 'we need to stop these civil wars!' tickers all the time. Their RCI values aren't terrible, but running friendly dispatches to stabilize them doesn't seem to matter anyway. |
"Also, how do I see a race's/planet's population density equilibrium?" On the planetary information screen ('Equilibrium Population'). It should be listed right below the entry for total population. |
