Summary | 0015787: "Preload all images" option causes crash on startup on Linux
Description | Today the game started crashing on loading. I've renamed the settings.dat and it started fine. So I checked differences between the default settings and that renamed file and found that PreloadAllImages:1 causes crashing. Nothing interesting in the log, just this: Steamworks Init 07/09/2014 02:47:59 Game v8004 Steamworks IsRunning: True 07/09/2014 02:48:00 Game v8004 audio load: 115 07/09/2014 22:08:38 Game v8004 It may be hard for people to turn the option off since even the main menu isn't accessible. I have all expansions/DLCs installed. Here's my PC specs: http://pastebin.com/5nnMyssa

Narrowed it down a bit. This only happens with x86_64 version, with the latest update there's an option added to select between 32 and 64 bits so I've tested both. The default option (32 bit) doesn't crash. Both don't crash when "Preload all images" is turned off. |
|
This is even more narrow, both versions work on another PC. The only difference I see is the GPU, the crash happens on NVIDIA and everything is ok on Intel. The specs of the second PC where the game doesn't crash with "Preload all images" turned on: http://pastebin.com/HLPABiTh Though, not every launch make it to the main menu. Quite often it stops at "Loading Items From Disk" and the number is different every time. 32 bits version is more likely to freeze as it seems. This is correct for 8.006. |
|
With today's update (8.009) this issue is probably fixed. Loaded the x86_64 version twice with full preloading, loaded the saved game, everything works! Thanks, it really makes difference for many planets and units types. |

Awesome, glad that got it! :) |
