Summary | 0015986: Make right-click on planet overview icons of enemies set that enemy type as preferred target
Description | As related to Kahuna's thread here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,16475.0.html Right now, left and right-clicking on enemy ship icons in the planet overview do pretty much the same thing: focus the camera on one of the enemy ships of that type; left-clicking also deselects your units however. I'd like to propose having left-click perform right-click's current functionality (I struggle to think of a situation where I want to zoom in on an enemy unit and NOT have any units selected) and that right-click instead change the 'preferred target' of my current unit selection *without issuing an attack order*. As far as I know, issuing an attack order in the main view is the ONLY way to change preferred target. All too often I encounter situations where I'd just like to change the preferred target of a selection to say, Bombers, but without having to issue an attack order on *a* Bomber, making them all move to chase and attack *that* Bomber. Right now to get the closest to my desired result I have to pause the game, right-click on the overview icon for the enemy ship type I want to become preferred target, zoom in on the one the camera decided to center on, issue an attack order, unpause the game (since my units won't change their preferred target until I do), then move my units back to their original positions (since a Stop command clears their preferred target). This is way too many steps for my liking. Bonus points if it could also allow setting up a preferred target via the unit guide brought up by F1. Sometimes, I want my fleet and turrets to be ready to shoot and hopefully kill with an alpha strike a type of target that isn't even on the planet yet e.g. an incoming Dire Guardian in an exowave. Right now there is no way to do that short of sending my selection to another planet that DOES have the enemy type I want to be preferred target, performing the above steps, and sending them back... which is really, really obtuse at best and at worst (such as for turrets) impossible. Is there a way this or something similar could be implemented please?

It's a good idea, and I'd love to see it, but then there are all those poor Apple users with one button mouses. |

Whoa, really? Are there Mac users who play AI War with one-button mice? I personally haven't used a Mac in years... so I don't know how they play! By using modifier keys to 'right click' and give orders? I'm honestly curious. Ultimately though, all I really want is an alternate way to change preferred targets that isn't tied solely to attack orders. I think using the planetary overview to do that is perhaps the most graceful option, but that my proposed control scheme is a moot point and I'll happily use any implementation that allows me to do this! |
