Summary | 0016238: Display building counts and highlight buildings on this type while constructing a building
Description | It would be great if when you are constructing a building it would highlight all other buildings of this type on the screen and minimap. It would also be great to see the appropriate layout for that building, to see coverage area (may not work due to ambiguity in appropriate layout). It would also be nice to have the number of each of the buildings currently built for your city in the top left or right corner of each building. Perhaps even broken down into Working/Total.

I can have trouble finding all of my 'hospitals' or 'police stations' - some of the buildings just begin to blend together. This would really help me plan out my city map! |
Just to expand on this great idea, perhaps highlighting all buildings of the same type when your moused over a building on the map/ in the build tray? |
This is such a great idea!! |
If implementation is too costly - could it be done as a report? Different reports for different types (military, crime reducers, rage increasers, etc.)? |
I proposed some things around that idea here: http://arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=17063 Basically I'd propose to "gray out" the map, single out "similar" buildings in green, and show available adjacency bonus to the building you're placing in shades of blue (depending on the "power" of the bonus). Possibly other colors if you'd prefer. Also, when placing the building, I'd like the bonus / malus tied to the terrain and adjacency as a tooltip next to the mouse, and the bonus / malus given by the building you're placing overhead already placed buildings. |
I disagree with the graying out idea. The map is pretty, and washing out the color takes away from that. I think outlining all the buildings of the same type would be enough of a highlight to be very useful.' edit: I added a few more ideas in a separate ticket 0017178 |
How exactly would you highlight then ? I know of 2 ways to highlight, either make the "highlighted" building brighter, or making the rest darker. In the game the background, icons and buildings are very bright already. I fear "only" highlighting wouldn't be enough. |
Drawing an outline around the building hexes, or turn the "road" color to something brighter/darker? I guess I would be ok with shifting the other colors towards grayscale a little, but it feels like that is taking away the prettiness of the game in a mode where you are going to spend a large portion of the game. If they implemented your idea in the same way as the "blue cloud" shading for the lander area, then that would be pretty bad, since it just makes everything underneath more difficult to see. |
Hum maybe. When I zoom out the map and pass over the buildings, the "under the mouse" "outline" around buildings is barely visible to me. I don't really want the main screen darker all the time either :-(. I think the problem about the blue cloud is kind of the same, everything is too bright for overlays to work well. I can't see pollution clouds and crime well. What the competition did actually sometimes goes even further - and sometimes removes the buildings altogether to replace them by their "ground" shapes (see cities skyline). I don't have much "talent" toward using photoshop but I guess it could be a way to compare. |
