Summary | 0016563: Remove Advanced Linguistics unlocking higher tier language | ||||
Description | There have been several issues with players (see posts in forum, links available if necessary) not understanding that Advanced Linguistics is necessary to unlock rank 6&7 of a language. Graphics and text could be added to the linguistic screen, to the Linguistic Lab, and to Formalized Diplomacy. Or you could just remove the unlocking and have everything unlocked starting in Formalized Diplomacy. Given that the player still has to run enough Linguistic Labs to get to levels 6 & 7, I'm not sure that the unlocking serves a useful enough point to cost the complexity that it does. Alternatively, have full understanding of a language by level 5, and that levels 6 & 7 be exponentially expensive and give bonuses to all interactions. As a player you would get all languages to 5 and have only a handful of races (of special interest) be higher than that. I'm with ptarth here. I kind of like the idea of having "conversational competence" at level 5 (so most diplomatic options are at least understandable), possibly even at the same cost as getting to level 7 now, and anything above that having some extra effect, like increasing persuasion or maybe unlocking a few specialised options in the political arena. |
|
Thanks! * At language skill level 5, you now gain full "conversational competence" with other races, and can fully understand them. Going up in further levels -- up to 7 is possible, with advanced linguistics -- has a limited set of benefits right now, mainly to do with your diplomats being more effective. ** In future beta versions coming up soon, these two higher levels will increase your persuasion with those races, allowing you to get them to do things you can't at the lower levels. |
|
I like "Computational Psychosemantics" as the name for the advanced linguistic levels. By that point, you're less concerned about understanding the language and more concerned with using it to manipulate native speakers. |

Nice. :) * Advanced Linguistics has been renamed to "Computational Psychosemantics," since by that point you're less concerned about understanding the language and more concerned with using it to manipulate native speakers. |
