Summary0017211: Huge tooltips
DescriptionWhen playing at lower resolutions, some of the building tooltips (especially when placing buildings) are a tad large. See the attached screenshot for an example. The main culprit in this case is the population/housing requirement line, which doesn't actually need to be there unless it's unmet.

Aside from removing or reformatting the space-wasting parts of the tooltips, it might be worth moving them to the right when the mouse in on the left so the don't cover whatever it is they're informing the player about. (This seems like a slightly separate idea, so I'm happy to make a new issue for it if you think it's worth doing.)

Using icons instead of text could help too, as could setting things on the same line.

I'm not sure icons are the best solution here, but I'm not very good at UX stuff (apart from complaining loudly that I find something hard to use for reasons I often can't explain). An actual UX expert once explained that icons are best for small numbers of things that are referenced frequently and are counterproductive for large numbers of things that are referenced infrequently.

The icon field in the HUD is okay because those are there mostly to identify the numbers next to them and the tooltips provide a more detailed explanation. Icons in tooltips can't have their own tooltips, so I'd have to remember what the weird little picture of a man next to a house means. Also, it probably won't save all that much space unless the information in the tooltip is repacked more densely, which will likely make it harder to read.

I'd agree with that guy you've spoken to. And I'd consider "housing, food, money, turn to build" and a few more worth "iconing" on the tooltip, because they're the "small number" and "frequently" - basically they are needed in every building, and their icon is also on the HUD. Like the energy, cristal (when it was there) and metal from AI war's tooltips.

Given the screen size, even if one line is gained, it would much alleviate the issue.

Good point. That would have to be done consistently through the whole UI, though, with both icons and text in some places -- build menu tooltips, for example.
