Summary | 0017389: Restore linguistics screen, enable queuing of language levels
Description | The loss of the linguistics screen was a downgrade for me. Yeah, it's convenient to assign a couple of labs to a language and leave them to it. But when I have an important target (like opening up trade with a newly met race), I want to throw all my resources into it. Tracking down my linguistics centers and switching them over one-by-one is wearying. Even when I don't have important targets, I'd prefer if I gained one language level at a time, rather than splitting my efforts and dragging the things out without reducing the total time taken. To allow players to focus their efforts easily, while keeping it pretty easy to hand a ton of stuff to the linguists and let 'em have at it, I propose: - Restore the linguistics screen for directing language research. Remove the ability to point Linguistic Research Centers at individual races. - Allow the player to queue language levels like queuing tech. Allow having several languages in the queue. Show the queue with numbers in the spaces where the markers for unresearched language levels go. (Attached is a mock-up, heavy on the mock.) - Display the turns left until next level, points left until next level, and points per turn on the linguistics screen. - Move the political tooltip on the Select Target Race menu to be a tooltip for the language names on the left side of the linguistics screen. - Show the effects of reaching each language level in the tooltips for those levels. - Allow unqueueing language levels (and tech, while you're at it) with a shift-click. Restoring the linguistics screen returns the quotes from the depths of the city grid. This may be bad for the fluff by making it wear out faster. The Nostalgia Critic puts it: "Cast, step forward and state your stereotype."

For 0.904: * Language research centers no longer take a target race, but instead research the languages of all surviving AI races that you've met. ** The language progress from embassies and spy safehouses still goes just to their target race, since that's a secondary effect. * Each language now has a multiplier on how fast it is researched. ** And actual linguistic-research-center progress per language per turn is multiplied by a random number from 0.95 to 1.05. * The building details window for a language research center now includes a row for each language you can research, stating the level you have of each and how many turns until the next (or it's at max or if you need tech to progress). ** And each row has a tooltip giving more details. Thanks :) |
