Summary0017777: Should a Technocracy secede from the Federation?
DescriptionIt seems rather easy to form one of the new Technocracy states.

In my most recent game, I had the Acutians leave the Federation no less than 5 times to form a Technocracy by themselves. Every time I would drop what I was doing, pump some effort into the Skylaxian research for a bit until the Technocracy broke, and the re-recruit the Acutians.

This got pretty tiresome after the 3rd time. Even though the Acutans were friendly enough with the Andors to share tech, it still kept happening. Is this by design? It seems a difficult juggling act to keep your more military races in check if so, since they'll end up with more research power from all their planets...

Ha, that's cute.
It wasn't my intent that they break away like that. I might have to tweak the requirements a little, but I do want it to be possible for one race to overtake a technocracy and steal that "title" for themselves. It just seems like the swing between "having double the next guy" and "having half of theirs" is really easy to cause.

I agree the ability to overtake and steal the title is fun the issue here is that no-one is stealing the title. It's just:

Federation: Skylaxian - Acutian - Andor
->
Federation: Skylaxian - Andor | Technocracy: Acutian
->
pump Skylaxian research, Technocracy falls
->
Acutians unallied, no Technocracy exists
->
Recruit Acutians to Federation

Repeat ad naseum :)

My main concern was that it broke the immersion for me. By the third time I was thinking "If this were real, there's no way I'd actually be inviting a race that has already quit on me 3 times back into my federation".

My gut feeling is that being in the Federation should have some inertia attached to it - much like Betrayed races have to get *really* annoyed before they'll leave. Forming a technocracy without warning when the race is unallied is fine, but if an angry race will wait 5 years before actually leaving the Fed, then sure the player should at least get some warning of an impending Technocracy exit?

Also I built ridiculous reputation with the Acutians becuase you get +30 rep every time they join ;)

That would take a lot of fiddling with numbers, I think!
But you're right that it would be neat. I just don't know if I could "tone it down" so that it's harder for it to happen in the first place with some kind of warning.

To be clear, when I say "warning", I'm really talking about how I can go to the Federation screen and see the Betrayal score increasing - if it occurs to me to look. If I don't look, the sudden exit of one of my races is going to be a shock.

I got the feeling that part of your intention here is to have the player try to keep tech shared out across the Federation (otherwise you get what happened in my game). Being able to see some form of numbers would help me know how I'm doing in that. Maybe I *can* see the research scores for the races somewhere - I couldn't find such a chart or graph though :)

I don't think we need to use an actual popup on the right hand side, just a similar "I'm going to leave this information here, k?" approach. Give the player enough rope to hang himself :)

Should we re-open this, if you think it's something you'd like to do at some point?

There's a list of research scores in under "Racial Power Grid."
Either way, it wasn't my intent that they'd just bugger off out of the Fed.

Dang it! It's always in the last place you look :)

Alrgiht, that solves a lot of my "I had no idea that was coming" problems. So yeah, just some kind of modifier when they're in the Fed would do it I reckon - maybe as simple as (race-in-second-place * 2) for not in the Fed and *3 when they are?

That might work

Yeah, I had an issue with this as well. It seemed way too easy for your top dog in the federation to suddenly leave. Especially when you get that event that doubles research.
