Summary0017804: Flight feel
DescriptionShip flying feels off. I'm not sure how to describe it, and part of it might be from the gamepad controls being off. I was thinking that since this is a space ship of some sort, shouldn't there be momentum? I don't know if this is a good idea or not. My recent Galak-Z playtime might be influencing my opinion on this.

Misery, I'm not expecting you to fix this, but it's something definitely that needs discussion with you. In terms of this, I do agree that the lack of momentum feels a bit strange (and that's just a factor of how the deceleration value is cranked up completely), but at the same time with this needing SHMUP precision that's a bit of a problem. How to reconcile the two, I'm not quite sure.

Hm, yes, I can understand that.

The immediate solution that comes to mind: make it a control option, rather than something that's totally set. The player able to just choose if they want the momentum active for the feel, or if they dont want that and prefer the "stop on a dime" movement that there is currently.

It might sound a little odd, but in my mind it's not that much different than selecting between analog and dpad in this game or Isaac, for instance. Walking/moving in only 8 directions sounds strange on paper, but some players such as myself absolutely want it there. Heck, I'd often criticized NT for *not* letting me do this. I can remember alot of deaths due to crashes in that game just due to being forced to use analog.

That's the immediate suggestion that occurs to me. But I'll think on it and see if I have other ideas too.

That's a fair point. I ought to be able to do something with that...

Argh. Sorry, I just got to Mantis. I really don't think multiple options are good. You have to nail the feel -- there's no shortcut to this.

It's ok to have multiple options for the alpha/beta period, so people can try the options and give feedback, but this has to be determined. The feel of movement is so central to the whole game.

It's interesting that most classic shmups scroll upwards, and you control the sideways motion, where momentum doesn't have much of a role.

In any case, what if there was some momentum, but you could apply a brake to minimize it, possibly with some visual effect (e.g. your afterburner applied backwards?) It would definitely make it feel different from other games of this kind if you actually had to manage the dynamics of a spaceship to some degree.

Alos, I really want to see some minor bobbing as you stand in place so it doesn't feel like you're stuck on the ground.

The reason to have multiple options is mostly just to make it so that everyone can play, without reason to complain about anything. And frankly, it fits Arcen's design style too; having tons and tons of options sorta goes along with their games. To me, it's one of the best parts of them. Few games give you so much that you can do to customize your experience.

This game, I assume, would default to the "momentum" version (or whatever you want to call that), the version that is in there currently would have to be manually selected. That way new players will experience that "feel" to the game first, since having the current version be first would get wonky responses.

But the real thing about it is that in the end, it's not actually going to affect gameplay.... but it's VERY subjective. One way or another the game is part shmup, and those that are attracted to that specific aspect are likely to want that super exact level of control. Momentum just doesnt add into that, and for that type of player, will only kill the game for them. Nobody wants that. But yeah, it's not going to affect gameplay, or the design/challenge of enemies or bosses. Everything will work the same. It's just a different control option.

And really, it's one of those things where it's already in the game, the non-momentum version... it seems silly to just rip it out when it's both already there and harmless.

But you're right: The feel of movement is central here.... and that's the entire point. The wrong feel will push away certain players. By having the option, both types of players will get the feel of movement that's right for THEM, and that's what is important. As opposed to something like Nuclear Throne, which while popular, has it's detractors that are pushed completely away from the game by this exact issue (or by the forced use of analog VS the dpad as well). This is the sort of feature that just has no reason to NOT be there.

So long as the momentum movement is default, it'll all work out fine in the end.
