Summary | 0018070: Gamepad weapon select super clunky -- potential solution
Description | Currently, switching between weapon slots on gamepad is super unintuitive and clunky. Holding LB and then also specifically pressing B seems like too much of a manoeuvre. It is practically impossible to switch weapons on the fly like this. For example, let's say that I'm moving and firing north with Y, in order to switch weapon I have to hold LB, stop firing north and then press B, then continue firing to the north with Y -- this uses way too many buttons. Here is a fairly simple change that should dramatically improve the usability of weapon swap. Rather than having a specific button that needs to be pressed to cycle weapons alongside LB, instead whenever LB is pressed simultaneously with any weapon button -- be this A,X,Y,B or right analog stick for main, right trigger for special -- then that weapon is cycled. Now look at the previous example using this new method. Let's say that I'm firing north with Y, now in order to switch weapon all I need to do is tap LB at the same time and the main gun will be cycled. This would also work, of course, with any other direction, too. You can now weapon swap on the fly quite easily. In quieter moments the LB would also allow for weapon swapping while not in the heat of battle. For example, if you want to switch to special from missile without firing a missile first, you simply hold the LB first then press Right Trigger. The only complication that comes from this control scheme is what happens if you are firing both main gun and special weapon at the same time when you press LB. A couple of solutions that come to mind are that you could either simply allow both weapon types to be switched at the same time, or prioritize one of the weapon types over the other. This part would probably need a bit of refinement and testing to get just right. Seems like a much nicer solution to me.
