Summary0001987: Cannot connect to peer even with Hamachi
DescriptionTidalis just doesn't want to connect to another person I've been meaning to play with, regardless of whether or not we use Hamachi. We do see each other when we "Post and Search," but it never connects, and the game doesn't show up in the LAN area. I've disabled my firewall and she allowed hers to allow access.

AI War works perfectly (doesn't show up in LAN), so it's just Tidalis. We've tried:
- Searching LAN while hosting a private game.
- Changing ports (same ports).
- Trying each other for connection.

None of it worked, so that was a bit of disappointment, as I've connected to others fine in Tidalis (but not recently). However, I assume everything should be fine since AI War connects without a hitch.

Any advice?

With this, I strongly suspect that something is still getting in the way. Since you're able to post games it's obviously not the case that a firewall is blocking everything. But, it may be selectively blocking the port in question. Or, you may have something else running on the same port that is causing Tidalis not to be able to bind to that port. I'd check inside RuntimeData just to make absolutely sure there's no error messages there.

Beyond that, I'd try something like the following between the two machines:

Or even:

Would there be any reason why it would work with AI War, but not Tidalis? We're using Hamachi, so I would have assumed it would bypass the need for port forwarding, and we didn't have any Server Start Errors for the most bit (when we were trying to rehost a lot it would sometimes log that, but not for the most part).

Wait, you had some server start errors? That's your problem right there: that's saying that the port is in use by something else, generally speaking.

That's only for some of the time (quickly trying to re-host I've found does that)--most of the time it was a clean host, and we tried a lot of times.

I see. In that case, I'm not aware of a reason it would do that on Tidalis but not AI War, to answer your earlier question. They are substantially the same code, though not quite identical.

But, if you're using different ports then one could easily be blocked and the other open -- port forwarding is only relevant when going direct-connect across the internet, sure, but that's not what the stuff I posted above was for testing; software firewalls are also quite capable of blocking specific ports, which would be my guess as to what is happening here -- either the program or the port is being blocked, I suspect.

We tried using 6666 and 32320 (AI War was not running during this), though both attempts failed.

We'll try this again tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far, Chris.

Hmmm, that's very odd. It's possible there's some new issue in the new engine version or something, but that doesn't seem too likely. The network code isn't from the engine, and hasn't changed at all from the older versions of Tidalis, so it should still work just fine.

Alright, I believe we resolved the issue (somewhat) for when she directly connected to me today; apparently I didn't show up in the server listings that time, and I suppose it worked?

We'll have to see if we can connect again, or well, that is, after the fix for the crashing after cutscenes.

Awesome -- glad this one is resolved, at any rate!
