Summary | 0020994: Fit Galaxy map to window (whole galaxy)
Description | In both the custom game screens and the ingame Galaxy Map, the galaxy is zoomed in automatically and moving the mouse pans it. I think this would make scrolling tiresome for larger maps (120+ worlds), and I also would like to be able to see everything that is going on all at once in the whole galaxy (more useful mid/end game). With this in mind, it would also be beneficial to make the world name text smaller in the Galaxy Map. Many planets are very close together and the names get extremely cluttered compared to AIW classic's application

You know you can zoom out in the galaxy map, right? I think the ability to zoom in and out is advantageous. |
There are changes that I plan to make to make this a bit more helpful, but the old style from AIWC won't be coming back. It was extremely constraining and we rarely could fit everything we wanted onto the screen. It worked, but barely, and it kept us from doing a lot of interesting things that we can now do. Having the game snap to fit the window of the map is something I plan to do as I can, but I don't expect every map to be legible on any given monitor. |
Perhaps I don't know what you guys are thinking of for 1.0, but at least in the Custom start mode it would be nice to have Fit to Window option (or function). Unless something is planned for when you zoom in, there isnt really anything to look at on a zoomed in level - you are pretty much just looking at the shape/design of the galaxy from your map type you select. The panning is also not particularly useful here unless you are zoomed in. |
If a map has 400 planets, zooming out to see all of it at once won't really tell you much. |
Okay, so this helps a ton but isn't exactly what you were looking for: * After the first time the game is switched to the galaxy map (after you load a savegame fresh or start a new game), the game no longer will recenter the galaxy map without your permission just because you switched modes. Aka, you can set up a nice view of the map framing whatever it is you want to frame, and hop in and out of planets without that getting messed up. ** It's amazing how much this improves the feel of the galaxy map, frankly. I do want to get centering in there for in the lobby, but for during gameplay I think this basically meets my goals for now. Maybe having a centered-by-default option would be nice, I don't know. Thoughts welcome! |

This has been in for a while. Thanks! |
