Summary0002164: AI Wormhole Waiting
DescriptionI've noticed the AI waiting at wormholes a lot! The AI moves in a large fleet and just sits there doing nothing, waiting and waiting and waiting. The only two things I've found that can get them off the wormhole is to either move your fleet out of the system that the AI is waiting to go into, or to move through the wormhole and attack the waiting fleet. The second tactic is basically the first since you are moving your ships out of the system the AI wants into, but a little less painful than a whole different system.

I can understand waiting a little while to build forces up, but I've seen them sit there for 20 min at time and do nothing until I forget about them and move my fleet out and thus casing me to lose that system/homeworld. Calling for a reload of the save.

They also do this when there is nothing else to be coming reinforce their attack. I've forced half of a waiting fleet through and then the second half sits there until I do it again. This part being the key to the report, the waiting sometimes never stops unless you force them through.

yes, the AI waits at wormholes and just piles it's ships up until it has about the same size as your own fleet. if you want to stop the AI from going after your planet once you moved away your fleet, either build a nice defense with turrets or destroy the enemy warp gate.

Yes, they don't attack now until they think they can win.

This tactic sometimes causes you to lose a system and have to reload the save? Dare I say, working as intended?

That was not the point of the report, it was about the fact they could wait for 20min or longer and do nothing as threy wait for more forces that will never show up. I've killed dead end systems and the AI waits for reinforcements but they will never come due to it being a dead end system. The same applies for AI fleets on your doorstep waiting in neutal systems.

They aren't just waiting for reinforcements. They're also waiting for if there are a sudden drop in your ships. Aka, if you leave without dealing with them first, they jump you unexpectedly, etc. The alternative is just throwing themselves on your spears, which is not useful for them to do.

Here is the thing with computers, they are VERY patient. Unlike us humans, they will not "throw caution to the wind" when they have waited a long time and their patience has worn out. This seems so natural to us, that it seems like a poor decision when the AI does not do it, even though statistically speaking (in some circumstances) waiting for extra ships that may never come is a smarter choice then waiting around only for so long and then attacking anyways.

Of course, there is the whole question of fun. Is it fun for AI ships that were going to attack to wait around for potentially hours instead? Sometimes games sacrifice smart behavior to keep the game fun.

(Note, I am for the "waiting around for hours" behavior for the AI, as playing against uncannily smart opponents is fun, even if it can slow things down. I am raising this question to gauge other people's reactions to it)
