Summary | 0021708: AIP readability -- Color coded AIP progress
Description | Background/Problem: AIP, as it stands, does not communicate clearly the significance of the numerical value. The threshold levels for things like wormhole invasions are nice, but this is not quite sufficient and new players, in particular, will have trouble understanding what their actual progress is Proposal: AIP could be color-coded in the way that hacking is to give players an extra visual cue what their AIP actually means. It's just a scary red right now, even at the starting AIP. I consider this a major issue since AIP progress is really the player's main source of information--this really needs to be transparent as possible (making this more obscure could actually be nice for advance players but it's new players that need this most of all)

Perhaps it would be adequate to add a Tip explaining approximately how AIP works (if there isn't one already), and to give the text from clicking on the AIP section of the resource bar a nice text description of how the current AIP is interpreted. Maybe 10-60 AIP: "The AI barely acknowledges your presence" or "Humans? Pathetic scum. Not even worth noticing" 61-100 AIP: "The AI is starting to consider you a threat" or "Humanity is insignificant; we crushed you before and we shall do it again" etc... the choice of more descriptive vs flavorful lines can be made later (or picked at random from a set of possible lines). I agree that something to give the player more feedback of "Uh oh. I might have taken too many planets" more quickly than when they are crushed by a CPA might be desirable |

I'll C/C what I said about this on Discord: When we started playing AI War 1 in 2010 (I think?), the biggest issue we had with the game is fairly simple: AIP means nothing to a new player. Is 50 a lot? 200? What does it mean. It's just a number. We lost a lot of games because we had to understand that AIP above 50 starts to tickle real hard. and above 100 it's very dangerous. I watch a few LP of new players on Youtube, and they capture everything, then die. There's one little trick which could really help new players: a symbol next to AIP to warn them when the AI gets way too strong compared to them Like a "warning, too high!" |

I've added text in a Tip and the hover-AIP section of the resource bar pointing out that the game gets much harder whenever the AI gets a new Mark Level. Between that and explicitly calling out when a bunch of the AI's toys come online (like reconquest waves) in the hovertext, that should help. |
