Summary0002243: AI Carriers
DescriptionCarriers are also a nice addition. However, they tend to rush to Orbital Command Stations. On our last game, a Carrier escorted with some hundred of ships (excess threat) got past our defenses as our ships were busy with them, and when our starships finally managed to kill the Carrier, it unleashed everything inside it, next to the forcefield of command station.

Result was, insta-destroy of the Home Command Station, even though we had several forcefields protecting it, carrier was filled with bombers to our "un"luck.

Speed reduction in enemy planets, or different approach to their AI (instead of rushing to command center, doing something else maybe, unloading after entering the system maybe?) might be better.

This is where you really want defense-in-depth. Be that via multiple force fields around the home command station, and/or (better yet) multiple planets that catch the carriers before they ever get to your home command station.

May not help against thousands of bombers, but having turrets by your home as well as the wormhole seems like a good idea. This way, any units that make it past don't have a free shot to your home.

This does raise an interesting question. How long does a cap of Mk. I, Mk. II, AND Mk. III force-fields stacked on top of each other hold up against hundreds of Mk. III bombers?

We had defenses. Initial wave wrecked havoc on tractor beams (mark IIIs included) and carrier was on its way to our home. And it took 3 volleys to take down all forcefields. Anyway, might test that FFs vs Bombers later on :)
