Summary | 0022859: Multiplayer suggestion: mutual agreement pause
Description | In a multiplayer game, there are problems with allowing everyone to pause the game whenever, especially since a lot of people will do it by muscle memory. But there are also problems with not allowing anyone to pause. As a compromise, how about this? The pause button essentially submits a vote to pause the game, and notifies the other players. Once 50% + 1 of the players have voted to pause, the game pauses. It again requires 50% + 1 to unpause. A player can cancel their vote to pause at any time.

To throw a secondary idea; have each non-host capable of slowing the game down to 10% upon hitting pause; than doing the vote. So if its an emergency, they have a slight amount more of breathing room. |

I kind of wonder how often this will really be a problem, to be honest? I feel like this is a complex technical solution to a minor social issue between people who are likely friends. I could be wrong, but I'm feeling like if I really need to pause like RIGHT NOW, I might not have time for a vote, etc. I just got a phone call, a kid fell down the stairs, the AI is surprising me with a brownout, etc. I think taking away the immediacy of pause would be a really foreign concept for an RTS, at least for me. If someone is pausing too much, then just saying "hey friend, you're doing it again, could you not?" seems like a better way to handle things because it keeps the ability to have things happen quickly when needed. I guess I look at pausing kind of like an emergency exit from a building: DO NOT BLOCK, but alarm will sound. ;) |

You're right, this is probably something that you don't need to worry about until AI War 2 has a tournament scene ;) |
|
I mean, if we had any sort of PvP that was serious at all, it would just be so constantly filled with griefing and cheating. The game is the very opposite of being tournament-friendly, given that it is so easy to manipulate local files. Reconciliation would help with this, in terms of desync fixes, but it would put everyone at the mercy of whoever happened to be the host. |
