Summary | 0023018: The Human Home Command Station is weak, is it time for Sub-Commands, or something else?
Description | The Human home command station isn't an excellent station. It is almost as durable as a military station, barely effective as a logistical one, and doesn't (on its own) provide as much energy as an economical one. All of this... at mark one. It even has only a single factory, which is just disgusting without even a gun on the command station. It becomes increasingly embarrassing as time goes on, as it doesn't benefit from any Command technologies being upgraded and using science to upgrade it more than one level. Even at 3000 science, it is a questionable upgrade, let alone 32000. Something should rightly be done to help the shining jewel of the entire Human armada, as it often feels like the weakest link in the free systems instead. It might be a design goal for the Homeworld to be a soft spot, in which case extra care should be taken to keep it fragile while addressing the issue of it being weak. The most obvious solution is Sub-Commands, just provide the benefits of all the command stations by spawning a scaling Economic, Logistical, and Military sub-command, so a central Homeworld doesn't noticeably slow down the movement of fleets, and is as capable of bullying smaller amounts of AI ships as a Military station would. There are, however, two other solutions I believe are of note. Firstly, the simpler solution is to just... buff it to hell. Allow the Human Home Command Station to gain a mark level from any command tech, slap a gun on it, scale the speed aura, give it an attack aura at Mark V or the like, and maybe a Black Hole effect or hardened bubble shield at VII (Guess it shouldn't affect the gun in that case!) If players are dumping 20k Science into Command buildings, then shouldn't the Human Home Command station be more formidable than a particularly dry paper bag? The other option, give it character. Change the Human Home Command Station to be a modular building, and give the player some choices to play with that don't reduce the fragility of the Homeworld (If that's a design goal!) while making it feel powerful. I'm sure I could spout a thousand things that work for this, but it's just another way to keep it from being the lame dog of the Human armada. Sure, the ability to produce a ship line for a module or an IGC or hourly Science producer would definitely fix it, but that'd certainly change the balance in a potentially gross way. Ultimately, something should be done to the Home Command Station, but the scale of changes need not be grand. The first AI War had the Human Homeworld be a hive of battlestation's from a plethora of races, and had all the sub-commands to boot, but, enough of a change to replace the strength of allied Marauders on the homeworld would already do wonders.
